E-Commerce - 8/19/2005 12:55:46
Hey everyone... Been thinking about starting an E-Commerce site...... I'm just looking for input on what to expect and need to know before starting..... Does anyone have a site up that does a lot of business? I'm thinking on starting small....most likely selling just to the US.......Also how do you handle shipping? Do you make the customer pay? Do you have a deal with UPS? What about taxes? Do you pay them like a regular business....What about sells tax...do you set it up for where your office is..... Or where the person lives? Sorry lots of questions..... One more thing anyone know any good tutorials online? Thanks....

Be ready to make sure your site is secure! Make sure you use software known to work. quote:
Also how do you handle shipping? - Usually the shopping cart will be able to have a plugin that can give shipping rates for different items. quote:
Do you make the customer pay? - All depends on the item... quote:
What about taxes? - You will have to setup a tax zone on your site that will charge tax for everyone in every location that has a store, or where you run your business. quote:
What about sells tax...do you set it up for where your office is - It might depend on the state, but I am pretty sure that it is where your office is.

I would suggest starting out using baby steps. Build on as business demands. I have seen too many people throw away money before it s needed. A very nice solution, by one of our members, is http://www.ecommercetemplates.com . It is a very easy setup and has a great interface. Very low cost which of course is nice also. Also you must base your decision on what platform you host is. Some carts are great for Apache some are great for Windows IIS server. Your needs on if it is soft goods or a shippable product also makes a difference. Also what languages you are familiar with will make a difference. Some carts offer, for a fee, inital setup that may be something to consider also. Take care, Brian
