SamanthaVS -> FrontPage Ext. are Installed, but FrontPage doesn't think so (8/22/2005 16:43:57)

Ok, so I have been working on this project for a week and I've gotten nowhere. I am running IIS 5.0 on a W2K server. We have an Intranet as well as an application that use IIS. Everything was working fine until the server crashed and 18 hours later, Microsoft said to do an inplace reinstall of the operating system. That made the server work, but it then made FrontPage see the server as not having the FrontPage Ext. installed.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the FrontPage Ext on the server. I have looked at the registry to make sure that the permissions were correct (as directed by a KB article). I have created a new site and tried to publish the information to it. Anytime I use the FrontPage publish feature, it tells me that the extensions are not installed. I really don't get it. HELP! PLEASE!

For some odd reason this just seems to happen once in a while.

I suggest you do this, uninstall the extensions on that site.

Copy the content into a backup folder.

Stop the site in IIS.

Delete the old folder.

Create a new folder for the site.

Copy the content back into the new folder.

Restart the site.

Reinstall (or extend) the extensions on that site.

Recalcualte the web.

Try publishing again.

Strange, but it usually works. For the really difficult ones, I have had to reboot the server while the site was in an uninstalled mode...

I honestly think something just gets kinda funky with the ACL occassionally.

Hmmmm after reading your post again....it may be more involved than what I had posted.

I remember this happening to one of my sites a year or so ago...and the fix was difficult and meant editing the metabase directly.

Do you have other front page sites on the same server?
If so, do they work fine?
Have you tried adding an ADDITIONL site to the server?

The metabase has an nested entry for each site by w3csvc # and the ACL for the site that is giving you trouble could be out of whack.

When this happened to me a long time ago, I had to manually edit the metabase entries for the site that didn't work to mimic a site that worked ok.

Again, I know this will sound odd to some, but that is what has fixed issues on FP Sites for me in the past.

I do not recommend playing around in the metabase unless you are comfortable, but you stated you went registry diving and the metabase has a very similar format.

Do NOT change the w3csvc numbers...

I have it working now, and I pretty much had to do what you suggested in your first post. I unextended all the sites. (There are 2.) Then I moved the site that I was having problems with and reextended both sites and now I can publish.
Thanks for the information.
