ou812 -> ZoneAlarm Blocking (8/22/2005 18:52:22)

This was something I've not run across before, and maybe you haven't either, so just a heads up.

I was placing a new button on a clients site. They are now going to show the sponsors for their organization and wanted a button to display who they are. I created an image and called it "sponsorsbutton.jpg", along with a link to the page. I tested this and all looked fine.

I then loaded it up to a test site and asked the client to give it a look and they couldn't see the image, or a missing image (red x). Nothing at all was showing up. I had them clear cache, reboot, stand on their head. I couldn't get them to see it for anything. I asked someone else(Bobby - thank you!) to see if he could see it and if they could view it correctly, and he could.

I then asked the client to send me the view>source of the page and found the problem to be ZoneAlarm blocking my newly created image. It replaced my image with a "" comment. Apparently, my client had some strict settings on his zonealarm. I use ZA also, but it didn't affect my viewing.

Anyway, I changed the name from "sponsorbutton.jpg" to spnsrbutton.jpg and all works fine now. Hopefully, this might save someone some time if it happens to them and/or their client.

Was it some sort of active image / rollover? The way I read it, ZA just blocked an ordinary image??

You are correct. ZA blocked a normal image, with a link.

It replaced this:

with this:

then a bit further down put this in:

I've heard of this, not necessarily with ZA but Firewalls blocking images called things like banner.jpg things they think are ads - also they sometimes block images that are "standard ad" size so if the problem occurs it can be worth saving the image at a pixel less than the normal "round number"

solicitors -> RE: ZoneAlarm Blocking (8/23/2005 10:34:23)

you need to try and avoid those kind of terms...

advert, ads, sponsor, banner, etc...
norton definately filters those as well..
never heard of ZA blocking ads...but then i have't tried ZA Pro
(which it sounds like)

Happened to me when my viewers used Norton Security. The gif/button I had led to "advertise.asp" and it was blocked.

ZA Pro 5 does not display image placeholders (box with red X where image should be) if you have ZA Pro set to block images and placeholders. There is a setting in ZA Pro that you can change to allow the placeholder to show without showing the image itself, but since I updated to ZA Pro 6 and it destroyed everything I had setup for version 5, I can't tell you where the setting is or how to change it.

I never encountered a problem in ZA Pro 5 with an image name. The Applied Innovation logo in the left side bar of this forum page is named appliedi_hosting_ad.gif. ZA Pro 5 didn't seem to have a problem with that, and it contains "ad".

FYI, I haven't been able to get ZA Pro 6 to run, and their tech support leaves so much to be desired that I've temporarily switched to the Windows Firewall because I don't need the aggravation of debugging someone else's software for free.
