Google link checks - 8/24/2005 15:04:24
When I use Google to check how many links i have to my site it only lists those that expressly use the web address - i.e. www.onthewebnow.co.uk

I have numerous links out there on sites i've done but i usually link with "copyright On-The-Web-Now! etc." and add the url link to my site in the html - are links without the address useless to me!? :)

Hi Rick,

I think I understand what you are asking.

I use more than several "link codes" or HTML with anchor text as I like to call it. None of mine have, in type on the page viewable, my URL/address. It is always in the HTML coding.

Just an aside I believe Yahoo will give a better representation of back links than Google does but that is MHO only.

Take care,

Brian

Try to focus the anchor text to be relevant to the site topic. Instead of just the site address use descriptive words or phrases that match your site. Don't use the same anchor text for all backlinks, mix them up a bit with other money phrases.

On Google, try ::yoursite.com to see far more than the standard fare.

Thanks both

did this:

It did show more results but only allowed me to view the first ten

what does this do different from "link:mysite.com"?

Just click the link at the bottom of the page that says; "repeat the search with the omitted results included."

The link command at Google is just a gimmick. It only shows a few random-like links. Don't put much hope in the link command. If you want more Google results you're better off using the Google API, the query I listed above or something like > yoursite.com -site:www.yoursite.com

Edit: I forgot to add that Yahoo shows more backlinks by using the linkdomain command.

Thanks Mojo, all useful info

It's refreshing to hear that another SE can do something better than Google!

Things cycle. Google is on top today but who will be on top next week? This is why it is important to diversify.

Take care,

Brian

Many experts believe that MSN and Yahoo have closed the gap with Google as far as search quality goes, but Google has the reputation of being the best.

I wonder that as they diversify will their search quality fall further and further behind?
