Can exsisting FP site be made compliant? - 8/26/2005 14:49:06
I built our website in Frontpage about 4 years ago and have used Frontpage ever since (currently Frontpage 2003). I want to make our site compliant with 4.01 Transitional but am unsure if that is possible using Frontpage. Our website is very basic, without java, scripts, flash, or other fancy stuff. Unfortunately, our website is approximately 1000 pages so a total re-design of the website would require allot of work (although, if that is necessary then I would do it). Can our current Frontpage website be made compliant with 4.01 Transitional using Frontpage or will I have to re-design the website in Dreamweaver? Our website is www.windchimespavilion.com Any help would be greatly appreciated! Regards, Windchimes

Hi again (I answered some of this in the other thread so I'll point you there too!) FrontPage is just a tool - just like Dreamweaver. There's nothing to stop you creating a standard compliant site in either package or just using Notepad - it depends on what you put in there. Stay clear of the FP "widgets" just use normal HTML etc and you'll be fine. It's just as easy to create a non-compliant site in DW as it is in FP - but you'll have paid out that much more money to do so!! Follow the suggestions in the other thread about validating, DOCYTPES and checking accessibility and you'll be fine.

I would urge you to consider this..... your site is 1000 because of all the products which you display on "flat" html pages rather than with dynamic pages and a database and a scripting language (asp, php, cold fusion et. al). maintaining your site would be much simpler if you had a data base. In my opinion, the time to redoe your site is when you are ready to accomplish 2 things: 1. make it compliant 2. convert to db site. To invest all of the work to do just one would be a waste imho. If the idea of a db site seems daunting - it isnt. Many people on here do it with fp and there are excellent tutorials on that subject written by spooky.

Thanks for the great feedback and guidance!!! ... I have one follow-up question though. I read this morning that to be 4.01 Transitional compliant the website must be designed with CSS integrated into it (which I know nothing about, yet). If this is true, is there another accepted standard that I can design to that will allow standard HTML coding without the use of CSS? Thanks in advance! Windchimes
