Particularly those on dialup, does this take you out of the comfort zone too badly?
I would also appreciate any Mac users comments.
None of the links work btw, I am just trying to finalise the layout.
Thanks.
Carol

My we are sharp tonight aren't we[8|]

Tailslide -> RE: Speed check please (8/27/2005 3:44:50)

I get 30 seconds for 56kbps modem according to weboptimisation.com

That's Stu's sliding menu isn't it! Neat.

Can you crop those photos a bit so they're the exact width of the menu - that'll save some time for you.

Spooky -> RE: Speed check please (8/27/2005 4:38:04)

Definitely have to cut the images down - 5 @ 25k will be a tad slow

caz -> RE: Speed check please (8/27/2005 5:06:48)

Thanks both. I was just being lazy with the images, in hopes of getting away with it...ratz.

d a v e -> RE: Speed check please (8/27/2005 5:31:22)

ditto what spooky says on the images - they could easily be half of that! then it would be ok for dialup...

looks very nice apart from the logos... maybe those are only placeholder versions?

this for example weighs in at a tad over 6k saving you almost a whole kilobyte!!!!

i was a bit unsure about the pictures in the menu - i didn't realise they would expand - but they work quite well, i think ;)

Spooky -> RE: Speed check please (8/27/2005 5:34:01)

I dont really get the images on the menu - what is that supposed to look like? It doesnt work for me, but if you are still developing it?

caz -> RE: Speed check please (8/27/2005 6:41:37)

The images on the menu are of a bathroom from various viewpoints, as the silly b* hasn't got any whole room shots - just a bog here and a sink there. I did say ages ago, why don't you do before and after shots to help with visualisation for customers. That's what I got, so I thought that Stu's sliding menu gives a reasonable idea of a whole room.
I should put advice on how to use it maybe?

Thanks for the logo clean up Dave, they were gifs to start with.

Donkey -> RE: Speed check please (8/27/2005 7:12:53)

This is just a personal preference, but I don't like the menu Idea too much. I think that in the unclicked state the images are too small to identfy and the expanded image is also slightly too small. It confused me a little.

Have you considered making the buttons bring up a bigger image on the content part of the page instead?

Re your comments regarding shots of the whole bathroom. I sympathise with your client's predicament. It is almost impossible to get everything in a bathroom into one shot because UK bathrooms are inevitably small and you never get everything conveniently lined up against one wall. The best way would be to build a bathroom set in a studio , but that would cost a small fortune. He could use a digital camera with a panoramic view setting, a wide angle lens also might work but the image would be distorted. Another idea that I have used in the past (I used to be in the power shower business) is to approach an upmarket bathroom showroom (they used to be called Bathroom boutiques) and ask them if you can take photos of one of the bathroom sets that they will already have made. I did it all the time for catalogues and just gave the showroom a free credit in the book. I don't think it is essential that you show an actual bathroom he has worked on, as long as you show the quality of bathroom he is able to provide.

It loaded fine for me (1mb cable).

jaybee -> RE: Speed check please (8/27/2005 7:54:39)

Took around 3 seconds to load for me.

caz -> RE: Speed check please (8/27/2005 10:15:02)

Thaks for the speed check folks. Very helpful.

d a v e -> RE: Speed check please (8/27/2005 10:23:06)

btw i'm pretty sure you're using firefox so you are aware of the 'view speed report' under the tools menu of the web developer toolbar?? and also available at

http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/
(useful for anyone else reading this thread that doesn't already know...)

though of course it's good to get reports from real users!

:)

>edit< - oops sorry tailslide just spotted you'd mentioned that url as well ;)

Exactly. I don't know anyone now who still uses dialup here. ( And I do like to keep these things on the family you know [;)])

airattack111 -> RE: Speed check please (8/31/2005 23:03:58)

It took pretty much 0 seconds to load. I don't think images are a problem it loads fine. But the menu I don't really like..
