Internet Speed Booster - 8/31/2005 7:55:26
Can anyone recommend an Internet Speed Booster download that gives a free trial? A quick search shows numerous are offering a free trial but one never knows how many unwanted 'extras' might be coming with the deal! Anyone? - thanks

Internet + speed boost = spyware

Go for compression software, one that is licenced, one that is proven to work by the british military :)

Just to clarify... I mean any service/software purporting to speed up Internet connection speed.

OnSpeed I have heard of (all good reports!) and have now downloaded a trial version of it. I am already on broadband (ADSL) and just wanted to look into the possibilities of maximising performance, especially since setting up a home network and sharing my connection (with the kids!!!). Of course, I am very aware that any 'free trial' will frequently come with lots of unwanted 'goodies' (or 'baddies'! - i.e. the spyware) and so just wondered if anyone had a first-hand recommendation of any of these services - and equally importantly, what to avoid!

Thanks for feedback thus far.

If my ADSL was slow - Id be questioning the service provider. Typically, the sense of speed is dictated by the network (both local and global) rather than the content.

Spend any extra you would pay for a service on a faster plan?

Goto http://www.bandwidthspeedtest.com/

Then call your ISP and find out how your results compare to what they say you should have.

Our cable modem took a dive a few weeks ago, and I noticed it caused quite a few issues, so that might be something to look into.

there are some pretty slick things you can do to Windows to speed up its online performance... but if you're already on broadband the tweaks are probably not noticable.

You can speed up Firefox, but only a smidge...

I'm on cable at home and I usually find myself at the mercy of slower servers rather than bandwidth issues... at 4MB upand down things cook right along :)

Well, here's the results of my test with OnSpeed using the speed-tester service mentioned by Bobby:

My ISP package is supposed to be 512KBS
With Onspeed turned off I tested at 481KBS
With Onspeed turned on I tested at 1.2MBS

Other speed testers show vastly differing results (!) but all show some kind of increase using OnSpeed

I'm surpried that only one other person has recommended this, as I've heard numerous good reports from a number of people. You can get a free 7 day trial here: http://www.download.com/Onspeed/3000-2155_4-10422854.html if anyone's interested - let me know if you try it and what you think.

- These results are expected for a 512 package. It is interesting to see you get 1.2mbs with OnSpeed :)

Epilogue...

Having tried this OnSpeed for a few days now, although it does seem to work I have also noticed some 'halting' and partial downloads of sites. More noticeable though is what is does to graphics!:) They often look like over-compressed JPGs - I guess that is what it does and how it 'speeds' things along - hmm, not sure I like it now:)

That's an interesting site Bobby, I've just tested my connection speed twice in the space of 10 minutes and while my ISP says I should be getting 1.5mbs my speeds were 757kbps and 954kbps.

I'm wondering if it's normal for it to vary so much in such a short space of time, whether it depends on whether you're multi-tasking and whether it varies so greatly the higher your supposed connection speed?

I mean, Rick's speed was pretty close to his ISP's advertised speed of 512, mine wasn't really in the ballpark, but I wonder how close higher connection speeds get to their advertised speed and how much they vary.

You results will vary - itll never be entirely accurate.
Im on a 1mb plan, and I got a test rate of between 800-950kb (local test supposedly)

Using another local test site, I get 1150kb :)

Hi Spooky,

I realise they'll vary, but I was just a bit concerned that 750 and 950 were a bit low considering I'm supposedly able to get speeds of 1.5mbps. That's when I wondered whether other factors like I've mentioned may slow these rates down considerably, and/or the higher available connection speed, the more drastic the variance?

Gosh, what is the world coming to? If I can't see that web page or image a split second quicker, I'll sue my ISP for false advertising? lol

I have found a way to speed my cable connection, but do not want to hijack this thread and will start one with my results.

I fail to see how any program installed on my computer can change the amount of data that is sent from my ISP's server. A program on my computer can't see the data until it is downloaded....

Can someone explain?
