I'm currently looking into new hosting packages and came across one that compares windows (servers) with linux and says

"FP extensions available on both, the newer (also termed 'extended') FP extensions are only available on Windows servers."

What are these "newer" extensions? What can they do that's different? Has anyone heard of these?

It might mean they have the 2002 FPSE installed. Extended basically means installed on your particular website. I would recommend Windows hosting though to take full advantage of FPSE

True but usually on *NIX, people have problems with the upload component. Sorry that I was not more specific about what I was referring to.

Ah, that's interesting... I use FP includes, which work regardless of whether you FTP the site or use extensions EXCEPT... if you don't use FP extensions for upload you have to upload every page again after the include is updated!!! My problem for a long time has been that the FP upload function (not it's basic FTP capability) is very shaky on my unix server.

Do I take it then that this is nearly always the case with Unix? I keep thinking it must be something to do with server security etc. Are you saying that to use FP/sharepoint services (not too sure about them?) it is necessary to use Windows hosting? - despite the fact that hundreds of hosts offer "FP extensions on unix servers"!?

- That doesn't address the OS issue windows vs linux that we were talking about above. I didn't have time to search for it earlier, but that is the thread I was thinking of- guess I was wrong too.

It basically doesn't tell youw hat components require what os, which is what we really needed.

- Are you talking about what Corey said above about the upload component? If you have problems with doing a FP publish to your website, the problem is most likely the host, not the OS.

(Don't qote me on this, but I believe this is how it worked out) FPSE were made for the windows os awhile ago, then a group came along and made a version for linux, however they didn't make an exact copy of all the functions. Some of the more advanced functions (that I would never ever touch) were not made for linux.

The sharepoint services I think are the main thing that requires a windows server.

- As long as your host runs the latest version of FPSE, you should be fine with most of the common components. Corey said above there are issues with the upload component (I haven't tested it so I can't comment). Maybe someone will be kind enough to create a list of what is required for the FPSE.

I'll do a bit of research and see if there is anyone with this list.

The problem that I have seen with the upload component - is the file permissions. htaccess wants to control file permissions but so does Frontpage. I have noticed on *NIX servers that if you try to change the folder permissions on the server, it usually is not allowed. With Windows, it is very easy to change the permissions

Corey, are you talking about folder permissions? Or mod_rewrite with FPSE?

Btw, I sent a message to the company who creates the FPSE for Linux. I should have an answer by Monday.

I use FP (2003) but I don't usually use any of the components it has except includes. I'd gladly use php/ssi includes (my server supports them)but the trouble is, you can't view the included pages while working in FP design view or preview view. So I use FP includes, which can be uploaded FTP but there is then the issue with updates. So, I need either to find a way of working in FP with php/ssi includes or get the upload component working properly.

I have noticed that when I have installed FP extensions on the server that it creates its own .htaccess file but I am unsure about what changes can make to it, or to the original .htaccess - I seem to end up with two or even three at times (!) Corey, do you know what to do with the .htaccess files so that FPupload works as it should?

- Changing your OS won't affect the above.

- By default, most folders are chmod 755, so that shouldn't cause a permission issue. I wonder if it really has something to do with the mod_rewrite module and mod_frontpage. Have you checked if this problem exists without mod_rewrite?

We only use Windows hosting actually. We never offer *NIX hosting. It just was not in our business plan unfortunately
