401.2 error and no FP workie - 9/5/2005 15:01:00
I have made a dynamic website for my church. I have been successful with everything up until the day I moved onto the campus of this university in Seward, NE. I have already spoken the the IT people here, and they assured me that if the problem lies with them, they'll need more info to fix it.

If you check out emmanuel-hermitage.org (no www), you'll see the frontend site. about 80% of the data is pulled from a database that various people update using emmanuel-hermitage.org/backoffice, which is the backend site, and is password protected.

I have decided to use frontpage extensions administration stuff to setup the security for this site. Pretty stable and pretty easy to administer (since I'm 800 miles from the church now, I don't have time for hassles). From off campus, I can access this site, as can anyone at the church from any computer. However, as soon as I step foot on campus and try and access backoffice, I get the following page:

You are not authorized to view this page
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied because your Web browser is sending a WWW-Authenticate header field that the Web server is not configured to accept.

Please try the following:

Contact the Web site administrator if you believe you should be able to view this directory or page.
Click the Refresh button to try again with different credentials.
HTTP Error 401.2 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to server configuration.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Technical Information (for support personnel)

Go to Microsoft Product Support Services and perform a title search for the words HTTP and 401.
Open IIS Help, which is accessible in IIS Manager (inetmgr), and search for topics titled About Security, Authentication, and About Custom Error Messages.

This comes up EVEN BEFORE I have a chance to enter in a user ID or password. The box doesn't even appear.

Along with this is the fact that MS Frontpage does not work. When I try to open either backoffice or the frontend from frontpage (for editing), I get a bout 3 seconds of network activity, then nothing.

I guess what i need to know is, does FP extensions use some strange ports that the college might be blocking? That was the only thing the IT people could think of. We do not use a proxy server, per se. There is a cache server that stores images of often visited websites, and a filtering system that filters certain sites and blocks certain ports. But no proxy is setup on any client machine.

Let me know if you have an answer.

Is there a firewall in place...such as a watchguard or checkpoint?

Have you tried to access the site by IP?

The front page administration does in fact use specific ports, and it is set up during install (you will have to view this in IIS on the server...see the Microsoft Sharepoint Administration Site...Properties...TCP Port)

I contacted the company that hosts the website, and they told me the only port that needs to be opened is 80. I also spoke to the IT guy on campus and he said the only thing he can think of is either closed ports or a problem with my computer (even though it won't work on ANY computer on campus).

So I'm a little frustrated. As usual, everyone says it someone elses fault...so i don't know what to do. If anyone has any other suggestions or similar experiences LET ME KNOW! I'm forced to have to troubleshoot this myself and i need all the information I can get.

To USE Front Page you do in fact need port 80.

To ADMINISTER Front Page Websites using the Microsoft Share Point Extension Manager you in fact most definately need an additional port opened.

The port that needs to be opened in the firewall is determined at the install of the extensions and is not always the same on each server.

It does in fact appear to be the firewall that is blocking this. If the tech team is worried about security, they may be able to allow the port needed for you to ONLY your IP Address so you may manage users on the site.

(I personally have had to open the port on my firewall for one of my servers that I manage Front Page web sites on and I have ONLY allowed my IP at home) The host that says that only port 80 is needed is in fact wrong, however I wonder if it is the Host's fault. (If you can manage the site from off campus, then in fact the host has more ports open then they think they do)

I would think in your particular scenario, that the firewall at the campus is what is getting in the way. My theory for this is that you are originally calling the server extensions on port 80 and they place a call back to you on a tcp port that is blocked.

One other scenario would be that the range of IP's that you are on at the campus is blocked at the host's level to all but port 80 and whatever else thay have open.

Like I stated above, if you are able to open the management from off campus, the firewall at the host's level is definately open to other than port 80 (I GUARANTEE THIS!) and the problem seems to lie with firewall protection at the campus....unless it has to do with the campus's IP.

It could be that this partcular host had a problem from the campus and thus had to block those ports from that range.

This is a very interesting problem and I am interested in what the solution turns out to be.
