Looks like quite the fun system to me... Linux playground, baby!

:)

(I trust the mobo can take 4 x 1GB RAM so he can upgrade down the road?)

:)

By the time he needs 4gb of ram, his MB would be obsolete. Although it can handle it :)

LOL

So I don't suppose we'll be talking him into Debian Linux any time soon... :)

Well, once he knows how to turn it on, we can move onto bigger and better things.

You should go for a 10,000 RPM harddrive for you OS to be installed...just a small one so it doesn't cost to much..and then use that 250 fo storage......your system will fly....but that's my opinion....:)

Brandon,

I love those 10k rpm Raptors. I have one in my setup, and the last computer I built had them in a raid config. I can't justify the cost of the $175 Raptor for this computer, however, it might be an upgrade later. Thing is, I had $1k to spend on the computer w/ a 17-19" monitor. I think I will be coming very close to the budget limit.

All the parts are about the best price for performance, when you downgrade/upgrade you end up paying too much for the performance.

with the 10K drives you need to make sure you have really good air movement in the case... they get really hot, really fast. Especially when they're locked away with a P4 chip that also tends to pump out the btu's

:)

With my computer...it keeps my feet warm on those cold nights...from all the heat getting blown out the back...:)

The 74gb raptor does run hot, but it is made to have a lifetime of around 149 years running 24/7. Extra precautions such as the heat have been made on the raptor.

I read quite a bit on the raptor before I purchased it. I think it was actually more reliable than some of the standard 7200rpm drives.
