Double your speed - 9/6/2005 23:15:33
I have actually effectively doubled my speed in some tests using a server in between my workstation and the router. Cable connection, with a linksys router, DHCP turned off. I put a Win2k server between and set up nat on the server. 2 cards in server. The cards in the server have fixed IP's, and one nats to the other, both in the same class. My tests showed and effective 90% + increase in speed tests. I have not performed this test in a while, was a few months ago and I have been meaning to try it again since moving recently. I have discussed this situation with a few other network engineers, and the only thing that we have been able to come up with is that the "routed protocol" changed the packet headers enough to get the increase in speed. I have not done extensive testing with this just simple speed tests at places such as dslreports. I figured this might fuel a discussion...(ok a few of you will prolly call me a few odd names too) but if anyone wants the specs on how I set up the test I'll look for my notes. Rick Universal4

The Specs Workstation from which tests run is running Windows XP SP2. Static IP 192.168.1.100 Gateway 192.168.1.1 and DNS 192.168.1.1 Linksys Router DHCP turned off 192.168.1.1 (DMZ Enabled) Server Win2k Advanced Server (Workgroup box not a DC) 2 NIC's External 192.168.1.101 Gateway 192.168.1.1 Internal 192.168.1.102 NO GATEWAY Nat enabled Internal to External When using the server, my workstation plugs into a switch and that switch is plugged into the internal nic on the server. The external nic plugs into a switch which is then plugged into the router. When not using the server, my workstation plugs directly into the switch that plugs into the router. Server download 1963 359 up Card 1 SMC Card 2 CNetPro Without nat: card 1 1077 down 361 up card 2 1068 down 361 up With nat: card 1 1929 down 355 up card 2 1937 down 357 up I don't recall the exact chipsets on the card. I would be very interested if anyone ever takes the time to try this, let me know of the results....maybe I'll fire up a server and try it again. Rick Universal4
