Donkey -> FTP Problem (9/7/2005 7:45:57)

I have been using WS_FTP (free edition) for a few years now with no problems. I have some free space that my ISP (NTL) gives me; I use it for uploading files etc not as a web site. Yesterday I couldn't access the space I get the "Access Denied" message. I haven't changed the settings or added any conflicting software, and I can still ftp to and from the websites I maintain.

The ISP's help desk are no real help, they keep telling me that if I can access the space with a normal browser then the problem must be my end. I've had 4 phone calls with these people so far and all they can tell me to do is to make sure my settings are correct and try again. I think the problem must be their end. Does anyone else on NTL have any ideas what the problem could be?

I had a similar problem last year and I never did get it sorted. At least you got them to reply!

If they insist that your account is fine the only thing I can suggest is that you try the free version of Coreftp to see if that will help. I've been having a problem over the last week where on one site (I have several with the same host) I can log in but I can't upload anything, it keeps coming back with a time-out.

We think it may have something to do with NTL's firewall/proxy. Coreftp got me in first go. I have since played around with settings in Filezilla and got it to work through there by switching on passive settings (PASV). Core seems to set these as standard

This is probably due to the use of IPSec.

WSFtp will work as well if it is for this, but you must switch to passive in the site properties and save the new settings.

OK Rick, you seem to know what you're on about so answer me this please.

Site was ftping fine. Then one day it would connect but refuse to refresh the folders and refuse to transfer. Kept coming back with a time-out. Host says nothing has changed at their end. I changed the settings to PASV and it was fine again.

The other site, same host but on a different server, had the same problem a couple of months back but then fixed itself. It still ftps fine on the old settings with PASV off.

Any ideas?

IF it is because of IPSec....directly on the webserver the host would most certainly know the change in ft had to take place....so maybe some other piece of hardware in the route between you and the host (this is what probably happened) changed something or added a layer of protection someware such as something that is similar to ip sec or a "firewall/layer3 through 7 switch" that has changed and now disallows active ftp.

Or that could be incorrect and something else weird is behind it.....lol

One of the reasons I think that IPSec is one of the possibilities is it does NOT like active ftp.

the question was..."it was working and then quit"....well that particular criteria quite often leads me to find that....Windows was involved in some way, because it's all about working one day and then suddenly deciding it was gonna ruin your day....lol

I suspect NTL. But then I always suspect NTL. [:D]

most browsers use passive ftp, so if you change your ftp client's settings to pasv it will tell you a lot about where the problem lies.

It's likely the firewall has been closed to active ftp.

jaybee -> RE: FTP Problem (9/8/2005 7:05:54)

I'm running off the same ISP server as Donkey. (Must complain about that)

My issue with all of this is that if the firewall has been closed to active then why does one of the sites still happily upload on active but the other require passive?

It maketh no sense.

But then it's NTL, so it wouldn't.

yogaboy -> RE: FTP Problem (9/8/2005 7:12:18)

the servers don't all have to be in the same place or behind the same firewalls, even if it's the same organisation. It's likely that NTL has regionalised hosting centres near the major telco backbones in big cities. They may have a gateway firewall and then local firewalls etc etc.

Unless of course the websites are on the same ip address, but even then there could be a content filter setup in a particular way.

jaybee -> RE: FTP Problem (9/8/2005 7:18:21)

No, hang on, I'll explain better. NTL is the ISP we both use. Donkey is hosting on NTL I'm not.

I host in the US. The host says that although both sites are on different servers at their end, the set-up is identical.

So I'm going through the same NTL firewall to get at both sites but they're being treated differently.

yogaboy -> RE: FTP Problem (9/8/2005 7:45:05)

Ok, that makes more sense. So the NTL ISP outgoing firewall rules allow active and passive ftp, but the incoming firewall rules at the hosting sites are different - yours allow active and Donkey's only allow passive.

That would explain it.

And NTL[;)]

I already complained (your loud music and late night parties keep me awake all night) but they said they couldn't move you.[;)]

I've tried changing the settings to passive, and I've tried several ftp browsers, I've even tried using IE to ftp. Nothing gets through. It must be something their end. All the dimwitts on the helpline tell me is to reinstall my settings then switch everything off for 30 seconds then reboot. I have already decided to give it up as a bad job, but it is bloody frustrating.

jaybee -> RE: FTP Problem (9/8/2005 9:28:50)

Yup! Like I said I never did get back into my freespace and gave it up as a bad job. I think they give you the space but if you actually use it then they get upset and lock it.

Errrr actually, I'm not any more. We were both using the same IP range until very recently, now you're on a different one.

It could be that they've shifted you to a Soton server rather than the Winnersh kit. That may be why you're having problems. Or are you not on the NTL box at the moment?
