FTP Problem - 9/7/2005 7:45:57
I have been using WS_FTP (free edition) for a few years now with no problems. I have some free space that my ISP (NTL) gives me; I use it for uploading files etc not as a web site. Yesterday I couldn't access the space I get the "Access Denied" message. I haven't changed the settings or added any conflicting software, and I can still ftp to and from the websites I maintain. The ISP's help desk are no real help, they keep telling me that if I can access the space with a normal browser then the problem must be my end. I've had 4 phone calls with these people so far and all they can tell me to do is to make sure my settings are correct and try again. I think the problem must be their end. Does anyone else on NTL have any ideas what the problem could be?

This is probably due to the use of IPSec. WSFtp will work as well if it is for this, but you must switch to passive in the site properties and save the new settings. Rick Universal4

IF it is because of IPSec....directly on the webserver the host would most certainly know the change in ft had to take place....so maybe some other piece of hardware in the route between you and the host (this is what probably happened) changed something or added a layer of protection someware such as something that is similar to ip sec or a "firewall/layer3 through 7 switch" that has changed and now disallows active ftp. Or that could be incorrect and something else weird is behind it.....lol One of the reasons I think that IPSec is one of the possibilities is it does NOT like active ftp. the question was..."it was working and then quit"....well that particular criteria quite often leads me to find that....Windows was involved in some way, because it's all about working one day and then suddenly deciding it was gonna ruin your day....lol Rick Universal4

the servers don't all have to be in the same place or behind the same firewalls, even if it's the same organisation. It's likely that NTL has regionalised hosting centres near the major telco backbones in big cities. They may have a gateway firewall and then local firewalls etc etc. Unless of course the websites are on the same ip address, but even then there could be a content filter setup in a particular way.
