tinkering -> optimum jpg file size??? (9/8/2005 18:23:52)

What is the optimum jpg file size to use in my FrontPage site. I have a bunch all ready at 75dpi, around 50kb. Should I use these?

Mike54 -> RE: optimum jpg file size??? (9/8/2005 18:36:03)

DPI is for printing only and has no relation to web viewing. As for the size of the file it will depend on how many of these 50k files you'll be putting on a page. Too many and your pages load at a crawl. I try to use a rule of thumb of keeping page size close to 100k (give or take) though it's been the subject of discussion in the past, with others having different rules of thumb[;)]. If you're happy with your load speed, whatever works for you...

Hey Mike,
If I have 5 image thumbnails per page, make them 20kb each? If I have 10 thumbnail images per page, make them 10kb each? When does the file get so small that you lose resolution on the full size image?

depends upon the image - trial and error

tinkering -> RE: optimum jpg file size??? (9/8/2005 19:07:39)

So should I just build the gallery pages using the 50kb files that I already have, and then slice them in half later if the pages turn out to be too slow in the working website?

Mike54 -> RE: optimum jpg file size??? (9/8/2005 19:13:17)

Again, it depends on what you're trying to do. If you want small images that maintain the resolution of the original it ain't gonna happen. As soon as you start to resize you lose. It will all depend on what YOU feel is acceptable. On the other hand if you want a few thumbnails linking to a larger image you might well be able to get them (the thumbs) down to 5k or less and find them acceptable. Don't use 100k as the hard and fast number, use it as a reference point and tweak it to your needs.[;)]

Maybe if you explained more of what you're trying to do...

Hi Mike, I'm building a site to present my artwork/ business. I am using FP XP. I am using the Photo Gallery template for each page of images. I'm not sure how many thumbnails I can have on each page but I assumed 5 or 10? Does this info help you to see what I'm up to? Thanks a bunch, I'm a newbie.

Mike54 -> RE: optimum jpg file size??? (9/8/2005 19:38:22)

I'm not a big fan of the FP photo gallery... I feel that it's quirky and IE[:'(] centric. If you click on the link in my sig you can take a look at some galleries created with JAlbum. There are also other (free) photogallery applications available so you might want to do a search around.

tinkering -> RE: optimum jpg file size??? (9/8/2005 19:59:59)

Where do you get JAlbum? Is it a free software? Nice Macro!! It's funny how you can be looking at a damsel from behind and you swear she is watching you straight up. Very nice work and very nice presentation. You make my site look like garbage. I've already started with FP now and I kinda hate to turn back. I'm not that good. Will JAlbum link to my FP site? How do I do that, short of paying you to build me a great looking site?

Mike54 -> RE: optimum jpg file size??? (9/8/2005 20:12:57)

Sorry I should have put the link in to JAlbum for you. Yes, it's free, it has a bunch of templates with various layouts and with a little work can be integrated pretty easily into a FP site. My site was done with FP BTW and the JAlbum template modified to fit the theme.[;)]
If you want something a little more manually created I have a tutorial on one of my old sites here but quite honestly after I discovered what I could do with JAlbum I quit doing it manually[8|].

tinkering -> RE: optimum jpg file size??? (9/8/2005 20:40:32)

What is BTW? I hope I can manage to 'modify' the JAlbum template to fit my site. I'm not doing anything too fancy this time. I am starting with the corporate web template with the 'profile' theme. I built a site manually last time and spent a good portion of my life getting there just to have it quit navigating because I backed it up by cut and paste instead of publishing it to the cd. Now I am quite lazy at the thought of starting from scratch again. Will you give me a hand if I run into complications trying to make the JA fit the FP? I am confused enough with this simple path I am on. Thanks for the link. I will go there.[X(]

When I said I built my last one 'manually', I mean I started with a blank page and used no template. I wasn't using code. I downloaded JAlbum but havn't opened it yet. I looked at a lot of the skins. I can't find, so far, how to create anything like that with FP photo gallery. What skin did you use for your site? Once I have it built, how do I go about integrating the JAlbum into FP? Is it possible, without being a professional, to modify JAlbum so it will meld somewhat with my FP theme?

Tailslide -> RE: optimum jpg file size??? (9/9/2005 18:49:34)

In answer to your original question (neatly avoiding the last one!) I usually stick to an approximate size of 150px wide for thumbnails at a file size of 3-7k each depending on the image.

tinkering -> RE: optimum jpg file size??? (9/9/2005 19:05:02)

Is that 3-7kb per thumbnail size or full size image? Is this a dumb question? Somebody told me that some programs allow you to use smaller files for the thumbnails and larger ones for the actual image. Is this an option in FP (or JAlbum)?

I have yet another question. Is it possible in FP, to modify a chosen theme, like keep the general look of the theme but change for instance the background colour? If possible where/how do I go about that?

Thanks a bunch everybody!

Tailslide -> RE: optimum jpg file size??? (9/9/2005 19:15:30)

Sorry - not trying to confuse you (it's just a talent of mine to be confusing!) - I haven't used JAlbum - these file sizes are just to give a general idea of what you might aim at.

When I do a simple gallery i.e. just a selection of thumbnails which when clicked on opens a larger version - I use a small 3-7k photo for the thumb and - depending on the page layout - usually about 500 px wide larger version which will vary in file size but usually about 15-20k.

Absolutely, depending on how much effort you want to put into it. I'm a Quality Manager not a web designer.[;)] Which FP theme [:(] are you using? Does your "gallery" really need to match that theme or can you live with a "smart" transition?

Once you have it built all you need to do is create a link from the main site to the "home page" of your gallery (and one back). JAlbum basically creates a mini site for the gallery, complete with "home page" > thumbs gallery and image pages.

Play with JAlbum, it will create your thumbnails for you, resize the main images, align them in an order, allow you to determine titles and any number of other options. YOU need to play with it a little and find out what it can do. If you want it to be good it will take some effort on the designers part.[;)] I've never yet found software that made me look good without some effort on my part.[&o]

Hello Mike54,
I was thinking of using the 'bananalbum' (JAlbum skin). I was thinking of buiding separate gallery pages and link them to the selections in my bleak corporate FP profile site. I'm not sure how but it sounds feasible. One problem I have with the bananalbum is that the large image does not have a nice white line around it (to define the edge of the dark images on the black background). I can't seem to see a way to add a 'border' to the image. When I preview the page, I see that I can open it up in FP and apparently do some editing with FP. I am quite confused here. Can you give me any suggestions how to do this?
I have, since writing the above, found how to add the white image outline, but still what about opening the JAlbum in FP?
One thing I don't like, and I hope it isn't too prominent, is the banana logo.[sm=yikes.gif]
So, when I get the JAlbum arranged I add hyperlinks somehow to allow navigation between the mini sites and then publish it to the server?

Mike54 -> RE: optimum jpg file size??? (9/11/2005 7:06:15)

When JAlbum created the gallery it placed all the necessary files into a folder. Open you FP web and drag and drop the folder from your HD. Now the contents are part of your site and the pages can be opened just like any other.

You should be able to change the logo once you get a feel for "tinkering" [:D] with the template in FP.

Not sure how you have your nav set up but a simple link to the gallery "Index" page with a return link on the index page and each sub page the gallery should allow reasonable movement.

Once you're happy with it give us a link so we can check it out.[;)]

Hi Mike,
So you are saying, drag and drop the finished JAlbum folder into my FP web folder? If that is the case I will give it all a try and hopefully have a finished site to show you not too long from now. Thanks
