Non-Profit -> XP upgrade? (9/12/2005 16:07:48)

Is using an upgrade version of Win XP as opposed to the full version still a bad way to go? I know that when XP was first released many people very strongly recommended going with a full install and not the upgrade. Is this still the case or has the upgrade gotten better?

I work for a small non-profit that has received donated computers sans the OS (I can't use Linux; sorry, Bobby [;)]).

TIA

Tony

i think the upgrade only works "over" a prior miscrosoft os so if they are sans os, i wonder if upgrade will work

You're not clear. Are you trying to distinguish the version of XP that you buy -- upgrade vs. original CD -- or are you describing the process -- OS replacement vs. clean install? I assume the latter. When I upgraded my PC, which had Win98, I bought the XP upgrade CD and did a clean install by backing up my data files, installing Win XP, and then reloading the data files. This is equivalent to reformatting the disks. I believe you have to do this to convert the disk drives to NTFS from FAT32.

You're right; I was not clear.

What I have is 6 PCs with no OS. I need to put XP on them. I do have licenses and cds for Win 98. So would it be safe to put 98 on them and upgrade to XP or do I need to shell out the big bucks for 6 full-XP licenses and disks?

Just install the XP cds as a clean installation
When it asks for a qualifying product, insert the 98 cd - it doesnt need to be installed beforehand

Not quite so true. XP can run on FAT32, but you can convert the drive to NTFS via Command Prompt. Does require PC restart, and is done by:

convert [drive letter] /FS:NTFS

You cannot convert the current drive tho, or at least, Windoze says you can't[:D]

That ($99 US x 6) could pay for a lot of other nifty things...
