NOOB NEEDS HELP!! web hosting on home pc, forms don't work - 9/12/2005 17:46:37
hi, i'm totally new to web hosting. i'm a student and i wanted to host my website from my home computer. i used this guide from www.pcstats.com (http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1774) and was able to get all the basic html pages to work. however when i added a feedback page with forms, i get an error which says that it will work correctly only if published to a web server that has the frontpage server extensions installed. i have no idea what that means.

all my files are in the c:/Inetpub/wwwroot/ directory. i am using frontpage 2003 to create my html pages. when i open up my site in frontpage and go to tools/site settings/general tab, it says FrontPage Server Extensions version 6.0.2.6353 and under Server version it says, "No server currently in use".

i'm pretty sure i have IIS installed, i'm not sure if i have FrontPage Server Extensions installed. is there some way i can verify what i have and what i need to install?

as far as possible, i don't want to use a web hosting company because i don't expect to have a lot of traffic to my site. i only want it as support for my resume to provide additional information.

any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Trust me, its not worth the hassle!
Look for one of the free hosting providers and use them, its all set up ready to go. You dont need to worry about security, backups, uptime .......

Another thing to consider - hosting it yourself might be against the TOS of your ISP. Most do not allow hosting. However, you can check it FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 from Microsoft for Windows-based Web Servers for the file to install and read more about it. But opening up your personal computer to people on the internet is not that great of an idea.

You can get hosting for about $5.00 a month if needed. I would recommend Windows hosting if you are using the Frontpage upload component.

spooky and corey, thanks for your replies. one of the reasons i wanna do this is because anybody can get a domain name and a web hosting package and get a website running. i'm more interested in learning how it is done. the second reason is the computer that i plan to use is just lying there, so i'm not really concerned about security/viruses/etc. worst case scenario, i'll just reformat. also i've confirmed that this won't cause problems with my ISP. i think i have all the required software, i just don't understand what i'm doing wrong.
