Mojo -> Flash Pop-ups and cookies (9/13/2005 12:46:41)

More and more sites are beginning to use Flash pop-ups to get around the Firefox pop-up blocker. For example; visit atimes.com and click one of the article sections (I prefer Spengler). Even with the Firefox pop-up blocker active you will get the pop-up ad.

Flash cookies are everywhere and can be used to track your visits across *multiple* sites - not just the site that stored the cookie.

To look at some of your flash cookies go to the C Drive > Documents and Settings > User > Application Data > Macromedia > Flash Player > Shared Objects

One way to block the Flash cookies is to block Flash. I use an extension that works with Firefox - Prefbar

This extension allows you to check a checkbox to turn on or off - colors, images, javascript, flash. You can also clear the cache and even switch user agents with a drop down menue.

I don't get any popups or unders on Fx 1.0.6 at that site and I do have Flash enabled. But Adblock has a load of that site related stuff listed; it depends what definitions you are using with it.

A thread on Mozillazine today will help out with blocking unwanted ads:
