composites and a boat site - 9/17/2005 14:00:44
just finished some rough comps for my boss and i'm not sure what to think about them anymore as i've been staring at them the last few days!!!

they're a bit rough (like incomplete logos, dummy text, bits and pieces here and there!) but i would really appreciate any thoughts - even rude ones - that you may have.

i was thinking for the boaty site that i might use a stylesheet switcher to give users the choice between clean and modern and the default more traditional look - mostly just changing font faces from georgia to verdana, that kind of thing...

going to incorporate some sort of version of this menu system¨

oh yes the link to the 'pages'

p.s. the composites site will be fibreglass stuff, carbon fibre stuff and other, er stuff bunged together!

Hi Dave

On the composites site - I prefer the yellow/grey version - but that's just me!

On the Boaty site - I think I prefer the blue and green followed by the blue. Not keen on the straight green site - looks a bit washed out if you'll forgive the pun!!

Far as stylesheet switchers go - I've gone right off them recently! I think they can still be a good thing but not just for swapping themes. If you're going to use them then I'd use them for something "useful" like a contrast version or a PDA version (single column fluid) or for font-size increasing (better yet, just tell them how to do it in the browser!).

Far as the Project 7 menu goes - I remember reading something about it recently which registered but not enough to stick so I can remember it (*doh*) - you might want to make sure that it's cross browser - just in case that was the problem, sorry I can't remember.

Hi Dave,

All sites look really nice, I think I prefer the composite with the yellow, but perhaps thats just because I feel yellow goes better with blue than red does.

The Boat sites also look good, I'm leaning towards the blue/green one also. It's a bit difficult to comment further as these are just images, I'm assuming that they resize to 800x600 and look less spacious when resized to lower resolutions in general. Good to see the skip links in there and that project seven stuff has been bookmarked, it says that it's accessible which is great, but it'll be interesting to see if Tail can remember what it is she's heard about it.

Nice work!

Nicole

Yeah sorry - I'll have a hunt around today and see if I can figure out what the hell I was worried about! It might be nothing serious, I just remember a mental flag popping up...

Edit:
Dave I've had a good look round and can't see anything that would be a current problem with the top end menu.

They did have a problem with the menu not working in Safari which would definitely have been a reason for me not using them - but they've got a fix on there now (you have to search for it though!).

It was probably about a year ago that I looked at them and decided against using it - they've updated the menu since and added more functionality including being one of the few that you can tab through properly - so I'd certainly consider using them now too.

2nd edit: I just saw it says that you need Dreamweaver - boo hiss!

Hi Dave, these are great.

I like the red on the composites and the blue / green on the boaty.

It's fantastic the way 'Composites' reflects fibreglass and other bunged together stuff - you certainly have a great deal of talent :)

thanks for all those - of course it's 'easy' putting them together as comps, but making them work in html/css at diff resolutions and browser will be the question!

shame about the pvii menus needing dreamweaver, well shame for those without it!  ;)

have to make a waterskiing site (my boss came third in the world barefoot skiiing chamionships this year and he makes and sells ski boats) so will pester you all with that as well when i have it ready :)

thanks for the comments so far - one suggestion my boss Evert said was that the boat site
needed a bit more contrast, but it was first thing monday morning when he looked!

thanks tailslide for the update on the menus - i assumes that they were cross browser and accessible which is why i went to the pvii site but good that you verified it!

anyway i've run out of exclamation marks now! so will go...  ! (oh  found one more;)
