wseehorn -> server error when opening web on my machine (9/18/2005 9:10:54)

FP 2003, Windows XP, SP2 & all patches/updates

I have a website built in FP2000, converted some time ago to FP2003. Not using any server extensions/includes/shared borders. I use FTP to publish it on the web (host 1and1).

I tried to open my website (my working copy on the hard drive) in FP. It doesn't recognize that it is a website.

The globe/blue dot has disappeared from the web's folder.

Using the browser window when I do File->Open Website I am able to open the folder, browse through it, see all of my pages and files.

When I try to open it (by File -> Open Web or by double clicking one of the files) I get the message

server error: the url 3509/index.html is invalid. it may refer to a nonexistent file or folder, or refer to a valid file or folder that is not in the current web

It worked the other day. I don't think I've installed anything/made any changes.

Any clues as to what happened & how to fix it?

I attempted to fix it by creating a new web page then copied and pasted from my old one (using Windows Explorer). At first I thought it worked, but
then discovered that all links were absolute ones, to files on the computer.

What response do you get in FrontPage when you browse for the local site files then double click index.html?

Initial opinion: Sounds like your machine has been instructed to act like a server.

browsing with Windows Explorer & double clicking on index.html opens the website in Firefox (default browser). It appears to function normally - the links all work.

When I try to open the site with FP if I choose File->open site I see a normal looking folder (without the blue dot indicating a web folder in FP). When I choose that folder to open the error message is "server error: there is no web named 'c:\Documents and Settings\Will\My Webs\3509'

If I use File -> Open again I can see the folder without the "magic" blue dot. That's when I get the message posted in my original question.

I didn't deliberately instruct this machine to act as a server. If you can point me toward instructions on how can I tell whether or not that's the case, and how to correct it I'd appreciate it --

I wasn't able to find this error message on Microsoft's KB or by Googling.
