controlling text overline style - question (?) - 9/18/2005 15:35:38
When using text overline with large fonts (e.g. with H1 text) I notice that IE6 makes the line thin but other browsers make it very thick (and ugly!). Is it possible to control the line thickness of an overline?

text overline?

you mean a top border or how are you doing it??

you could use
h1 {border-top: 1px solid black;} in your css or something similar

I've been trying:

h1 {text-decoration:overline;}

Looks fine in IE but too bold and ugly in others (my h1 tag is also set to 2.8em).

If I try adding borders (i.e. top border) it gets complicated because the h1 tag spans the entire row - I've tried playing with "dsiplay:inline;" to control the H tag but it's all messy! There must be an easy way of adding a thin border line above some H-tag text and controlling its appearance?

You could put a <span> inside the <h1>. If you put the span around the items you want overlined then apply the border:top etc. to the <span> it should achieve what you want.

Try putting html {border:0; padding:0; margin:0;} as the first line in your stylesheet.

Not sure if this will work but it's a good idea to do it anyway in all stylesheets so you know you're starting with 0.

Thanks so far - still not getting there though :)

Isn't it strange how a simple thing like a thin line over a piece of text can get so complicated! :)

do you need to have a your heading soo big?? i agree the line looks ugly but maybe there's a happy compromise for firefox et al where the heading is smaller and so  is the line??
