FP Admin Issues (?) - 9/21/2005 14:23:17
Hi, I was recently hired to take over an ASP.NET enabled site that depends on a number of users to update content with FrontPage. Some have reported strange things happening, and after looking through forums and forums (not just FrontPageWebMaster!) I've decided to look for help here.

I have several cases of users who cannot see a page in Design mode to edit. Instead, what they see is a small box that says "ASP.NET Control: Panel" and cannot do anything. The files being edited are .aspx, but this works for everyone else.

The other issue is with a few users that have always surfed to the page in IE and then selected File -> Edit with FrontPage. They no longer have this option and even the Edit button is grayed out.

Microsoft support has nothing on either problem. Has anyone else dealt with these issues before?

i am surprised they show up in display view for anyone - .aaspx are asp.net files and consist of scripts to be run at server

If it's ASP.Net then in design view, the will see diddlysquat. WYSIWYG editors are physically unable to show Server Side Tech coding in Design view. All server side techs produce HTML outputs, and require a server with the necesary software installed to make work.

Try using Code view :)

Thanks folks, but I don't think those are the answers. The site's been up for over a year now and there've been about 2 dozen people using FrontPage to make departmental changes to content with design view until recently. Actually, in design view they can't harm the scripts - or at least there's no evidence that they have yet!

Code view would be fine - if they were me. Let me tell you - some of these people are using Word for the first time! And in many cases, they're too young to remember the old WordPerfect "." commands for formatting, so I have nothing to compare it to. I'd have to set up an HTML learning program, and that ain't gonna happen....

I think of this site as being similar to riding on a train, where everyone has access to the brake. Or in this case break.

Thanks, tho'

this shouts "content management"

I wouldn't (and don't) allow users, (especially newbies) to ever come near site stucture and design. Consider a good content management program...

Ellipisces, I wish I were kidding. I also wish I had any say in the matter. When applying fo rthe job, they pressed me for critical feedback on the site (www.neco.edu) so I finally went with a word about how navigation-heavy the main page was, when it should have more content. That met with instant resistance. This site was designed by an outside agency that specializes in advertisements, under the direction of a CFO and a fundraiser with no web savvy at all, and created by a programmer. Most of the pages could be straight HTML but it's all .NET. There aren't even any META tags for search engine placement!

Unfortunately they're also cheap, and the only cheap content mgt system I know about is based on Mason, which sits on UNIX - and all they use here are Windows servers. <sigh> Someday...

Oh well. Job security, right?

Well, I found the fix to my problem of users' edit buttons/text option being grayed out. Turns out all I had to do was clear their caches and set it to a smaller size. I settled on 100 MB as a decent size, a far cry from the 1 GB plus the cache was set at. Still no info on the "ASP.NET Control: Panel" problem, tho...
