A big problem - Cells out of control!!! PLEASE HELP! - 9/24/2005 8:36:07
Hi,
My page layout is...
Left column, with multiple rows underneath (navigation, news etc) and a central column
which contains the main content.

I have been editing it with Dreamweaver and Frontpage.

In Dreamweaver it looks perfect. But when I view the saved file, the left column is streched down, leaving gaps in between.

I have checked the raw HTML, and I can't seem to work what the problem is.

When I view it in Frontpage, it looks completely messed up!!!

I could post the page if it is needed.

James

Here is a link to the page:
:)

Try it in Dreamweaver first...
Then try opening it in Frontpage...I can't work out what is happening there.

Thanks for your help Dave.

I tried inserting another table, but It didn't quite work out. I chose to align it to the top, but it hasn't stopped the cells shifting.
If it wouldn't be too hard, could you quickly put the table in yourself and host it somewhere? Because I don't quite understand :)

Anyway, I was considering making the 1119 width a bit smaller, but I heard most people these days have their monitors at a resoloution 1280x1024 - So I thought it should be OK.

Really! Where are these most people?

Most people on here are web designers. They tend to be pretty much up on the technology front. Most of them, if you ask, will tell you they're still at 1024 x 768.

Most professional people on here are still designing to cater for the vast numbers whose res is still set to 800 x 600.

euww! your code and layout is really messy - too much effort to try and work with that but i mean something like this
http://members.tiscali.fi/dave_pirjo/test-area/tables.html
making your table 100% is the best idea and then rework your stuff from there!

I see what you mean,
According to GVU's latest data, as of April 1998 16.6% of all Internet users is a monitor resolution of 640x480. That represents a downward trend from 19.95% in October 1996. In contrast, 28.4% of users have a monitor set to 800x600 pixels. That represents an increase from 17.67% in October 1996.
I will resize that! :-)

Thanks for that page Dave, I understand it now....

Huh?

As an understatement, I'd say GVU is just a trifle behind the information curve with 1998 data - 2004 would be considered obsolete.

Expressed as a percentage of screen resolution users, 640x480 now 1% - 800x600 has dropped to 28% and, as Jaybee pointed out, 1024x768 leads the way (with 54%).

Well, I have moved all the content onto the new page, it works great.
It is annoying how a small mistake can completely mess up the HTML coding and look of the page!

Thanks Guys :)

James be careful who you listen to. There are a lot of script kiddies out there who think that everybody is on the latest everything.

As far as res goes, whilst most people with modern machines will be at 1024 x 768 there is an increasingly ageing population. Your eyesight starts to deteriorate at 40 or so and a lot of those people will then switch their res to 800 x 600 as it's easier to read. Either that, or, if they know their browser, they'll hop into the view menu and increase the text size.

Both of these, if not caterred for at design time can completely wreck your layout.
