gessosaxman -> my page is up. (9/26/2005 15:16:15)

Well, when I first came here, my site was in it's early stages. It is now up and actually has some design stuff. It does not have a bunch of fancy stuff, but I kinda like how it came out. Let me know what you guys think. I am experienceing a couple problems, but I will take them to the correct forum. Oh, you can check it out at

Ok, so multiple people have read this post, and noone has anything to say about my site? Come on, let me know what you think.

jaybee -> RE: my page is up. (9/26/2005 17:00:05)

OK,

Front page, impressed. Not going to be liked by Google due to the lack of content but design wise, nice.

Next page, took a long time to appear. I added up the total size of the images on there and it came to over 120Kb. Recommended size for a page is 30-50.

I was a little curious at the blank area in the middle but thought maybe when I chose one of the links the middle would fill up then WHOA!

I'm onto a new page, completely different design and feel, as were almost all the others and then I got to bios which filled up the middle of the screen I'd expected to get filled.

Really, golden rule of good web design is try to give the entire site the same look and feel. Layout can be different but going from dark and moody to Ebay cheerful is one heck of a shock.

womble -> RE: my page is up. (9/26/2005 17:05:32)

I'd agree with everything Jaybee said. I'd also ditch the intro page. It serves no useful purpose and is potentially going to hurt you in terms of SE ranking because you've got no content on it.

gessosaxman -> RE: my page is up. (9/26/2005 17:06:42)

I am assuming by the Firefox link in your sig, that you are using firefox. As for the empty space in the middle of the page, there is supposed to be a pic of the band there. As for a different style and feel for each page. They are all the same with only the middle section being different. I will have to try the page with firefox, and see what you mean. With IE, all the pages are the same. I am a bit confused. Thanks for the input. This just reinforces the need to check the page with multiple browsers.

The purpose of the intro page has less to do with website design, and more to do with music marketing. It is about getting the logo into peoples minds. I will have to give this suggestion some thought.

Well at first, like Jaybee I thought the middle of the page would open up a bit when I clicked the links, and like her, I agree that you should look into making each page consistent with each other.

I also suspected that I was missing something, so I booted up Internet Explorer and had a look there. Bad news I'm afraid Matt, the second page looks really nice in IE, shame that it doesn't show up at all the same in Firefox.

If you haven't already downloaded it, Firefox is a great browser that a lot of us seem to use most of the time. It's standards compliant and can be downloaded by following the link at the bottom of Jaybee's post.

Ok, so how do I fix the viewing problems related to firefox? I have downloaded it, and there is definatly stuff missing. It also takes a lot longer to load with firefox then with IE. Thanks for the input, keep it coming.

That woke me up.....

I agree I didn't know I was still on the same site so many links to so many designs.

The main thing the site is lacking is a fluid surfing experience. I didn't know where I was or why I was there.

Decide on a layout and then use that layout for all pages. That should be a good starting point.

d a v e -> RE: my page is up. (9/27/2005 11:40:42)

all those image with the brownish background would be better as gifs (save/export from the original images) and your logo definitely would. also the photo could do with some optimisation too!

works ok in IE but too much missing in Firefox

ditto the commments above re: consistency

don't like the centred text for the main body. try normal left aligned or even justified

oh yeah for headings - if they aren't links don't underline them

gessosaxman -> RE: my page is up. (9/27/2005 12:17:46)

I still have not received any possible solutions to the missing pieces. I understand that it looks rather bad, and confusing when viewed with firefox. Now tell me what to do about it. The design them is the same from page to page, except that there is stuff missing in the firefox browser. So How do I fix it.

Dave, how would saving the images as Gifs help the website. I don't ask out of doubt, but seeking a greater understanding. Turning them into gifs is certainly not a problem.

Thanks guys for all you help so far.

d a v e -> RE: my page is up. (9/27/2005 13:31:50)

for a wild stab in the dark i think it might be the postioned spans, maybe they should be just divs??

use jpegs for photos and other images with gradients that require more than 256 colours to reproduce smoothly, and for vectors/shapes and images with limited colour palettes/text use gifs. your Gesso logo is 53k as a jpg but around 11k as a gif (and that from the jpeg, from the original it would be possibly smaller or at least clearer.)

gessosaxman -> RE: my page is up. (9/27/2005 13:35:26)

Thanks for the tip about the use of jpeg, and gifs. I didn't know it made that much of a difference.

I am no expert so I just make comments as a visitor.
Personally I do not like having a useless first page that says 'Click here to enter' - I just feel it is a waste of my time. However when I do enter I like the look of what I say is the first page. As I am on dial up I found the photo a tad slow to open but it looks cool. I especially like the look of the links (with the mini graphics) Maybe you could do the Gesso Dictionary part in dark brown rather than the starkness of the black. Try to match it with the dark brown of the top header with the 'good pick me up'. That's enough for now. I will take a gander at the other pages before I make any more comments. Michelle

gessosaxman -> RE: my page is up. (9/29/2005 23:22:59)

Thank you Michelle. I hadn't thought about the time thing with the Logo page. Being on broadband myself, it only adds a few seconds. However, I really need to change it out of consideration for those with dial up. There have been some other good points about that logo page. The idea was to get the logo out so people can see it. I will have to work on ways to get the logo into the page design without that index page. Thanks everyone for the input. Please keep it coming.

gessosaxman -> RE: my page is up. (9/29/2005 23:54:01)

Michelle, I changed to color of the text to match the other background colors. I tried changing the background to the brown, and the text to the other color, didn't look good. I also tried a couple other combinations. The one I have on there now looks good, is easy to read, and isn't quite as stark as the white on black. Let me know what you think. I think it actually matches the design on the top with a black background and that sorta peachy text.
