Paint Shop Pro - Annoying Behaviour! - 9/26/2005 16:13:14
This is not really a graphic question per se but someone with PSP experience might be able to help me - please:)

If I have PSP open and then try to open any image file from anywhere else on my PC (e.g. through explorer or FP) - i.e. R-click > open with > PSP... - instead of the already open version of PSP just opening the file it starts up a second instance of PSP to open the new file. Can I change this behaviour in the settings somewhere?

Rick,

I'd reset Preferences then, if that didn't work, uninstall/reinstall.

Am using PSP X, have been a PSP user since it was shareware, and have never experienced this behavior.

Thanks for reply Larry - can't see anything in options about file opening - I'll try a re-install:)

Ooh... BTW - here's another quirk maybe you/someone can help with...

When I add a one pix border to an image and export as jpg the right hand side ends up minus the border! Either minus the border or maybe there is a slight grey (as opposed to my colour choice) on the right side!

I have tried setting the right border to 2 px - guess what - I just get a 2 px border!:)

?

After using the PSP uninstall, best to manually remove residual tracks from "Programs" and delete "My PSP Files" subdirectory from "My Documents" as well. Will make for a cleaner reinstall.

As to the border problem, my only suggestion is to experiment with canvass size settings - initially make it much larger than you need. Crop later, etc.

Rick,

By that I meant to manually delete from "program files" what PSP leaves (the residual) behind after the uninstall.

Should look something like this:

C:\Program Files\psp (jasc) (corel)

Larry is correct, if you're having border problems, work with a larger canvas then crop back to size.

The only program I have that opens a new instance every time is MS Word and that drives me to distraction.

I just tried a 1 pix black border on a image using PSP 8 and it worked OK.

Let us know if the re-install fixes your problem.

Tried clean re-install of PSP8 and it still opens up a second instance every time I open a new image from my PC!!!:)

Tried a border test too - 1px black border - save as JPG - no problem. Any other colour border and the right side just defaults to a kind of grey/black colour line! - ?

May I ask why you use right-click to open it and not just double-click on the file? I have PSP 9 (downloaded X last night) and have never had this problem.

Hi Marissa

Double clicking on a fie (say, JPG) will open it with the application with which that file is primarily associated. Presumably you elected to associate all/most of your image files with PSP. I like to keep the prime 'association' with the simple Windows Image Viewer. Therefore, to open my JPG file (for example) with PSP I use R-Click>open with>PSP. It makes no difference whether or not my JPG file is asociated primarily with PSP, I tried that and the result is just the same! :) (?)

if psp is already open, why not open it from within psp?

That's what I wondered all along, but was too afraid to ask!

That's what I have been doing but it is not always the most convenient way of working. E.g. I may look through various images on my H/D (quicker & easier to preview than through PSP) and decide to open one, then I have to go back to PSPand navigate the folders again to open it. I may want to open an image from within FP - same thing, I'm working in FP, decide to edit an image but then have to locate again through PSP :)

I'm having the same problem with PSP, though I only realised last night when I was scanning a pic and once it had scanned, it opened up the new image in a new instance of PSP. I discovered a handy command on the file menu though - it's labelled 'exit'. :)

Huh! As a fellow sufferer I would have hoped for a little more sympathy:)

Tip... If you click that little 'X' button (top right) you can do the job in one mouse click rather than two :)

RICKP, you are correct about the right border. I tried a red 1 pix right border and it doesn't show up after saving the file. A PSP bug maybe? Tried a 2 pix right border and it shows up all right but one pix thicker than the other borders. Go figure. A two pix right border is ok but not one pixel?

Hey you photoshop people out there. Try it and see if Photoshop does any better. I would be interested to know.
