My wife is running Windows XP with SP 2.0 on a fujitsu lifebook notebook computer. She has an unusal USB issue. She has the following perihperals connected: Microsoft Wireless Mouse, smartdisk crossfire USB drive, epson flatbed scanner, HP 7550 Photo Printer, Targus Bluetooth adapter, third gen 5GB iPod, two USB bus powered hubs

Whenever the laptop is shutdown, peripherals disconnected, and later reconnected and the notebook powered up, XP has to go through every device and remap to the installed drivers. This takes a significant amount of time and doesn't make sense.

I considered that the USB root hub assignments may be changing therefore requiring remapping but why should this happen if the physical ports are not changing. Any ideas folks?

Windows has several issues with USB

If you look on the box for an MS Blue wireless mouse (for example) it states that M$ does not recommend using a USB mouse with Win XP... and they include an adaptor for it [8|]

Windows also has a tough time with too many USB peripherals installed at one time. If I remember correctly the max it can handle reliably is 5.

Is it actually reinstalling drivers each time, or is it doing the old "Detecting new hardware" routine?

Thanks for the reply. It's not installing anything. It's apparently just detecting new hardware and mapping drivers to USB addresses. I was wondering if the problem might be the reassignment of virtual USB locations if there is such an animal each time it's connected. I suspect it should not be doing that as that would defeat the "plug and play" intention of the whole thing. maybe I will try connecting peripherals one at a time and then powering down. Pain in the you know what. This stuff doesn't happen on my mac. Thanks for the help and let me know if you have any ideas for me to try.

That's because Mac OS knows how to play well with USB... Windows doesn't (not always anyway)

During the boot process XP is going to go thru the detect and map deal, I don't think there's any way around that. Other than to leave the things you don't use all the time unplugged until you need them.
