Suggestions Please - 9/27/2005 15:42:17
When setting up a form to be accessible the validators require a value in each of the text boxes. If the box is for example an email address, I've been setting the value to

"Replace with email address" and that shows up in the box when the page loads.

My cunning plan has completely backfired though as emails keep coming in with a return address of

"Replace with email address" or if I'm really lucky, the actual address stuck on the end.

What do the rest of you use? And does it work?

Do you mean when there's text in the text box already and the user either types over it or it's already selected? That's Priority 3 you're playing for eh? Blimey!

Here's a really useful site with some tips on forms including some Javascript etc: http://www.websemantics.co.uk/tutorials/accessible_forms/
This page passes priority 3 on Cynthia.

I played with that a couple of times but I couldn't get it to look decent. I just make sure I use <label for> on everything in sight but then again I've never really tried for Priority 3! I do like the look of the different colour backgrounds when the focus is on a certain input area - that's pretty and useful!

Yes, always go for priority 3 and if I miss it then at least I've got a very good 2. I have 3 sites at 3 or as close as I can test them to but his form thing bugs the heck out of me. I'll take a look at your suggestion while we wait for Dave Randall to arrive with the gospel according to the UAWG.

(After he's hurriedly rung Leonie to find out) :)

Text fields may have a default value [A].

* Recent studies indicate that users may skip prefilled fields.
* This is no longer an access technology requirement.

Input elements without visible labels should continue to contain text (search, login) but ensure that the default text is either removed or selected upon focus.

HA! Thanks just what I needed. The forms always have visible labels so I can just kill the content.

Dave can you ask Leonie to ask Cynthia to stop flagging it as an error. TA. xxxxxxx

That's a heck of a useful link there. Can you post it in your list in Useful Links?
