Trouble After Changing ISP - 9/27/2005 21:46:21
Aaarrgh. I've been wanting to change ISP's for about a year, but have been afraid to. Now my fears have been realized.

I got a new ISP, changed the routing at my domain registrar, published the site using Frontpage once the change took effect, and then the fun started. My images folder contained dupllicates (three or four of the exact same file with the exact same file name!) and one graphic that is used by 151 of my pages as a background is no longer linked to any of those pages. To "soften" the look of the pages I use a small paper looking jpeg in the background. It is properly hyperlinked on my PC, but the hyperlink gets broken on my site www.casfm.org. It worked fine at the old ISP, but not now.

I'm thinking that it may just be too many links for this particular ISP. Tomorrow I'll copy the jpeg to different directories and then link to each file from within the page's respective directory and see if that will work.

I have other issues as well, but will save those for another day.

Stuart,

You are talking about with your web host, http://valueweb.com not your ISP (where you get your interent connection from).

If that's the case, let me make sure I understand what you did.

You changed web hosts, and then modified your domain name servers to reflect the new web host.

After that, you uploaded your website using FrontPage. Then when you finished uploading, you noticed your images folder containing duplicate images, with the exact same file name?

Aha! Thanks for clarifying the webhost/ISP semantics. I like to try to use the right language when I can, although I'm not always successful.

You got the situation correct. However, the duplicate file names seem to be gone now. It was isolated to my images folder, which contained mostly images, but not entirely. One specific file that showed up four times was bkg2.jpg. That is exactly how it showed up in the Frontpage directory when I opened the site on the host. When I sent the images to the Windows Previewer, different file names would show up in the bar at the top, such as bkg2.jpg bkg212.jpg etc. I don't remember the other names for that specific file exactly, but those are two that did show up. Somehow it was duplicating the file during publishing. Other files that were duplicated included gif and doc files. I eventually got rid of the duplicates, but my main problem now is that I can't re-establish the link from the 150 files that reference bkg2.jpg as a background. The link shows up just fine and dandy on my PC, but gets completely lost after publishing. It appears that most (if not all) other picture links are intact.

Another time when I was trying to publish the entire site again, it seemed to duplicate the people directory that is under images. It's really whacking out.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I don't see a reference to a jpg.file in the body tag?

You might be able to update all of the pages with search and replace, but be very careful!

You may want to test it in a copy of the site first...

At the very least, make sure you have a backup

Thanks for your help.

I had several problems with the new web host. And I am not blaming valueweb at all, but I'm going to revert back to my old web host. It's been a real learning experience. First thing I learned is that my fears can come true. The problems I had mostly seem to result from publishing. They were:

-Duplicated files that seem to appear from nowhere;
-The link to at least one image file did not work, it was a "background" image reference. All other images seemed to work that were inserted in the body of the page.
-My database bombed out. I have a membership search database that no longer worked.
-And finally, the publishing seemed to lose track of all .doc files. Every time I would re-publish the site, it wanted to also send all of the .doc files again, wasting valuable transfer time.

Sometime you just have to stick with the devil you know. The most valuable lesson I learned is to not change your internet pointers before you test the site. I thought you had to do that, but it looks like you can publish your site without changing the pointers, by using the IP address, and then test the site.

RE: Trouble After Changing ISP AH HAAAA!!!!! - 9/30/2005 12:43:26
Well - I just called Valueweb to cancel my service and I "think" I got it fugured out. The guy I talked to said they are on a Linux Platform, and apparently I need a Windows Platform. At least I would imagine I do. My machine here runs on Windows XP and I use Frontpage for Windows. So it just makes sense that I need to make sure I use a Windows Based Web Hosting service.

I am a bit disappointed that two calls to their tech line didn't uncover that bit of information, but what the hey. It's all a big learning curve isn't it?

Back to my motto "If it ain't broke, fix it until it is......"
