underscore to hyphen - 9/29/2005 16:06:13
is there a way to change the default way frontpage saves new pages with an underscore to saving it with a hyphen between words?

You're best not using spaces between words in file names as it can cause problems.

RE: underscore to hyphen - 9/29/2005 16:38:08
Hi
What i mean is, suppose i create a new page and the title is "my first page", you then click to save and frontpage will highlight the save page name as my_first_page.htm. I want to save my default pages as my-first-page.htm. Is there a way to do this without having to retype underscores into hyphens each time?

Thanks.

I don't think there is, though I don't tend to use FP much these days, so I may be wrong, but you're better off not using spaces at all if you can help it, partly because it can cause technical problems, but also because if anyone's typing the full url in their browser, it makes life more difficult if you have to type hyphens and underscores as well.

You have to make your page names readable to a spider if you want to have any sort of optismation for your pages. People dont type the url in full, they normally go to a search engine for their search and click the link. If i make a page for advertising then it would be like mydomain.com/gohere

but inner pages have to be properly named.

Why don't you just name your pages with hyphens then? Don't use spaces and FP won't have a chance to put in underscores.

hum, perpaps im not explaining this correctly.

The page name is <title>this is a page for blue widgets</title>

gaps in the words. Cannot have the title with no gaps as it will be read by a human.

Now i click to save this new page and by default fp will save as

this_is_a_page_for_blue_widgets.htm

I then have to retype the underscores to hyphens. It doesnt to me it would be helpful if there was an option to chnage the way the deafult is saved.

What's in the Title tag should have no bearing on the page name - you can have <title>this is a page for blue widgets</title> and a page name that's totally different.

I have an old copy of FP 2000 on my machine and I just tried it - Sure enough it will bring up whatever's in the title tag as the default name for the file when you try to save it - but you just override it with whatever name you want and click "save".

right. As i said you just have to retype. My question was if the default setting of saving with an underscore between words can be changed to a hyphen which is far more search engine friendly. Sure you can retype each one but it would save a lot of time when creating multiple pages to not have to do that.

Ok you've got me there! :)

I've never considered typing in a file name (even multiple ones) a problem - but also my page titles are a lot longer than my page names so it would never work to have one the same as the other.

no, they are not exactly the same, just the first bit

example
<title>large blue widgets, widgets for building more widgets</title>

page name would be large-blue-widgets.htm

i just delete the last bit of the title from the default that comes up in fp.

I am not aware of any way to over-ride this setting.

From my own experience the underscoring does not affect search engines. Google has picked up individual pages on a clients site even using an underscore.

the question is not if it gets spidered but how it reads the title. Google recognises a hyphen as a stop symbol. Underscores are treated differently. If you want your title to be given full relevance you need to use hyphens.

I think the short answer's no, there isn't a way to change FP's default way of naming pages, though like Tailslide, I've never had a problem typing filenames.

As for SEO and how SEs spider pages, that's probably a discussion that's best had over in the SEO forum.

i never asked for a seo discussion but since people were putting out relevant comments i replied to them. I was just asking one thing, if the option to change from saving with underscores to hyphens was do_able. :) Thanks anyway.

Hi luv2tan and welcome to Outfront!!!

No there is not a setting inside of FP to do this. I looked around for some registry hacks to change this behavior and found something from JImco's (which is a respected site ((I'm a SpyWare paranoid person))). Best thing yet....it's free.

On the hyphen and underscore. The hyphen is called a delimiter not a stop word, I apologize on correcting you.

Take care,

Brian

Unfortunately, it is difficult and disturbing that we can't tell FrontPage what to do.

As to spaces being replaced by dashes or underscore, they are both acceptsable methods. I honestly don't think the search engines can tell the difference. Maybe I am wrong, but ieitherway, I don't think it would make an appreciable difference.

Jimco does it again. Recently released Space Replacer 2.

It will change those ugly spaces to underscore or to the character of your choice, which may or may not be a (-).

Just tried FP2003 and this does allow you to use a hyphen instead of an underscore.

Big difference, even Google on the webmaster pages say to use hyphens as they are delimiters and it will be seen as two words VS. word_one being one word..

Here is a direct link to the Jimco utility I mentioned in my last post...

Take care,

Hi Brian,

Thanks for clarifying.

I always use underscore myself. Never liked the look of hyphens.
