Arturo Balderrama -> Server time-outs (9/29/2005 22:32:23)

website www.puroconjunto.com

My site is hosted with Hostway. I have hosted with them four years. Never any problem publishing my sites. When I first built this site I did it in MSPublisher and had no problem publishing. Now I have it in FrontPage and was so pleased with hour FP works. When I loaded my site it took about 15 minutes (I only have access to broadband). Three days ago I made a very simple change to my index page and published only changes. I received an error message that my request could not be completed and that I should contact my host to make sure frontpage exts. were enabled. I did and they were. When I looked at the details of the error, it says that it was a bad message from the server. I have spent three days and numerous e-mails with Hostway and can't seem to get to the root of this problem. They have made numerous suggestions which I have tried and they have not worked. They say they have reset and then reinstalled my fp exts. Then they told me to send the entiire site up. It wouldn't go up. Received the very same error. Now they say that I am trying to load over 9,000 files and it is timing out. It times out after about 2 minutes. Looking at the stats on my account, my site only has 5,320 files. I don't know what is going on and they don't seem to be able to figure it out either. Now they suggest that I creat sub-webs. Don't know how to do that but can't see how that would fix my problem. If it won't publish just one page, how can doing that fix it. Would appreciate any suggestions anyone has to offer.

Arturo

Make a new page, then on the left side (where you have your folder list and files displayed), rightclick on the new page, and select publish this page. It should be something along the lines of publish this page only. It will prompt for your user/pass. If you still get the same error, then it is a problem with your hosting account.

Arturo Balderrama -> RE: Server time-outs (9/29/2005 23:47:50)

Thank you for your suggestion. I did a test page and it went up fine. Looking at my last attempted publishing it looks like it is accepting everything except my index file. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this.

BobbyDouglas -> RE: Server time-outs (9/30/2005 2:21:57)

If you don't mind having your index page offline for a few seconds (meaning when someone tries to access your website, it won't show the index page), then I would rename the index page (to something like index-backup.html) using your server control panel (it might be named file manager), then (inside of FrontPage) right-click the index, and select to upload the file.

If it works, try a full publish and see if that works. If that doesn't work, simply re-edit the index page (that you changed above).

You can also just wait until someone else comes along with a suggestion that will work 100%. I can usually figure out FP errors just by trying a few things though. (You'll notice the problems I have posted with FP never get replies for a long period of time, until someone stumbles upon a solution and reports back).

why so many?

The problem with the publishing may be an issue of the publishing process. When FP publishes it creates an index of the files (new) and files (changed). This can take a while. In your case it's taking too long.

Suggestions: Try the publishing process over and over. Sounds clunky but it can work.

Send up a bunch of files via FTP, if possible. They will need to reside in the same directory structure as the one in FP. Then publish changed pages only. You might try to send all of the images via FTP and then publish the pages, with features. Don't try tp FTP any Frontpage components, like guestbooks or forms though...

Arturo Balderrama -> RE: Server time-outs (10/4/2005 23:18:53)

Thank you for your suggestion. My site has over 300 song lyric pages. Other than that I don't know why I have so many files.

One thing that has puzzles me though and I haven't received an understandable answer from my host. When you are in FP folders, you have all of your folders on the left. On my host site, there are a number of folders which always reside there e.g. Merchant 2 ( my online music store/shopping cart.) After I published my FP site the first time all of a sudden all of those static files on my server are now also in my list of folders on my FP local site. Is that normal and could it be trying to send those up again also. My shopping cart files have over 300 CDs with many graphics. When I published through MS Publisher I never had to worry about those folders. Now I feel like something is wrong.

My host said that is what was supposed to happen and that it wouldn't have any effect on my publishing because those files never replicated themselves. Is that true

working on a solution...

hang on, for a second, if you don't mind

coreybryant -> RE: Server time-outs (10/5/2005 9:02:28)

Does that 5,320 files include al the other _vti folders as well?

Arturo Balderrama -> RE: Server time-outs (10/5/2005 11:32:54)

I don't know how to find that out

coreybryant -> RE: Server time-outs (10/5/2005 12:02:01)

You can try to go to my computer & drill down to where your local computer is stored. Highlight that and then choose properties. See what that tells you

Arturo Balderrama -> RE: Server time-outs (10/5/2005 17:36:15)

I feel stupid. I really did know how to do that. My FP site file says I have 1,989 files. My host account says I am using 5,320 which would include the shopping cart etc.

coreybryant -> RE: Server time-outs (10/6/2005 8:46:43)

If you have files on the server that are not local you might consider publishing to your local hard drive to have a back up. If you ever need Hostway to do a backup, they will charge you usually to do this

could be, when I mentioned the indexes or synchronization lists, Frontpage will ask you about files not on the local website and do you want to copy those. Generally the answer is yes unless they are folders that hold things like shopping carts, etc… When publishing, using the option (checkbox), “New and Changed Pages Only” can help in this situation.

Subwebs could actually help out in this case. A subweb is when you see the domain name like toolbar.yahoo.com or CD.puroconjunto.com. It is basically a way to split a site into smaller (more manageable) pieces. Have you been to your Hostway control panel? In there you can create a subweb. After you create the subweb you can use Frontpage to log in to the web and add pages and changes. When you publish it will publish only that portion of the website. … When publishing, using the option (checkbox), “Publish Subwebs Only” can help in this situation...

sorry for the delay, thought this went up, but [:)]

Actually it all depends. If I remember correclty, Hostway has their email on a different server as most do and they do not count those. The logs, if stored on a different server should not be counted either plus Hostway actually started deleting a log of the log file while leaving three months up only
