Any thoughts on this one - 9/30/2005 15:53:25
This is a site that I've worked on for about four years. I really like the layout, colors, etc. but am open to useful suggestions. When I first started building the site I chose to go with frames, which I now regret, but I don't know how to get out of them without a huge freaking total site overhaul. But for the most part, when people go to the site, they do go through the main index page, so getting into the site from search engines usually isn't that big of a problem.

Anyway, the site is www.casfm.org Thank you in advance for your help.

overall, i like your site. i think you are correct in not wanting to redo because of frames. while frames generally isnt a great choice- it is working fine so whymess with it.
2 suggestions:
1. you have a logo in the upper left that looks a tad amateurish
2. ditch the scrolling text - it looks so 20th century:)

Boy - You're not kidding about the amateur logo. But we're a bunch of engineers, what do you expect? That might be a good thing, however, to get done professionally. We're going to have a professional outfit start a magazine for us soon. That might be something they could do.

With regards to the scrolling text. I wanted to have something there to draw the eye to going to the calendar link without being too annoying. Do you have any suggestions?

And thanks for the thoughts on the frames. That's what I've been thinking, but I just can't shake the feeling that I ought to change it. But I have over 150 pages and I'm thinking I'd just end up screwing the whole thing up.

Now that is a swell idea. I think I'll do that. Thanks.

I think that the homepage could benefit from a bit more space between the boxes. On the other pages the boxes have a little more padding between them and the top banner and left nav.

I'd also break the central box text into a few paragraphs and, again, give it a bit more padding to take it away from the edge of the box it's in.

(My personal preferance) I'd make the navigation left-aligned or possibly even right-aligned - just not centred.

Dan's right about the scrolling text I'm afraid...

I'd seriously consider dumping the background image you've got on all your white boxes - it's not doing anything useful there - I thought my screen was dirty!!

Finally - Colorado always sounds like such a beautiful place - I'd have a photo on the main page just to remind you how lucky you are to work there!

Overall generally I like, and I think the layout works well, though I'd agree with what Dan and Tailslide have said.

For my own personal taste, the whole thing's just a little too...erm, blue...The large blocks of solid colour make it look a little, as Dan put it, "20th century". I'm not too sure about the lilacy colour on the central frame, but the border down the left hand side on the minutes page, with a lighter shade of blue just lifts it a little.

Also, if you're going for a professional image, the scrolling text and animated gifs just have to go :)

Thank you all very much for the thoughts. Although it is a little harder to read the critiques than I thought it might be.

Yes - the site is very blue. I like blue.

It's very interesting the little differences that make a site look like a pro did it from one that doesn't. These are some good comments and I'll incorporate them as best as I can.

Thanks again, and if anybody else would like to take a crack at it, that would really be terrific.

Nice site. I like blue as well.

I only have one comment. There is an empty area in the centre of your front page. It also highlights that the side boxes are uneven in length.

Either stretch the area to cover the empty space or create an even blue line across the page to break up all the text.
