A little feedback would be appreciated... - 10/4/2005 12:24:22
Just a little something I threw together to help my son (the bartender) out. I still need to tweak it for IE but it seems to be OK in FF. Can you see anything I may be missing (or anything not so obvious)?

TIA
Mike

LOL, a link might help huh? Nobe Restaurant

I like it. Your expertize in photography shows. one thing tho, I wasnt wild about the eliptical links on the menu page - the page looks bland after all the pages with crisp photos. also, I am not a fan of pdf's opening.

Hi Mike

Nice logo!

Couple of things - you've got 10 px (unwanted space before the px) in one of the menu rules which is doing odd stuff to your menu.

Also - you've got a fixed font size (and it's quite small). I'd try around font-size: .75em; for something legible and scaleable.

I think the home page would look more complete with more text and images on it.

I tried breaking out the different menus with some nice food pics but the restaurant owners opted for the ovals, go figure.:)

Since closing them has now crashed my (work) laptop 3 times I'd have to agree. I guess I'll convert them to gif and put them on a page of their own.

BTW Dan, my son took the pics, I just did a little post processing.:):)

I'll look into those menu issues Tailslide. I'm sure it was me tweaking around that changed things from the original...:):). As for filling out the home page more, it's something that can be suggested to the owners but they do have their own ideas.:)

I actually liked the home page "sparse" - I wonder tho if it would look better if the text in the links were larger. as to the ovels, I think they reminded me of cruddy FP shared borders or whatever..hehe. sorry it isnt the ovals themselves, its the content that is "bland" to these old eyes

The logo is sweet. I like the site; however, I do have to agree with Dan on the ovals.

One thing that stuck out to me was the reservations button on the left and how it seems smushed to fit in the box. Everything else looks sort of centered, but that one seems right justified (althought its not, just appears that way)

Viewing in IE at 800 x 600??

Like I said, still have some IE tweak to do.:):)

Ahh, I thought those were pics...are they cells set to stick out? I am viewing in 1024x768; however, I never have my IE full screen. I just did check in 800x600 and it is crammed on the right. Maybe make them into pictures so they don't resize or something?

It's actually a CSS menu, no images were harmed in the making of...:)

Then you wouldn't actually be viewing at 1024 x 768 would you?:):):):)

OK

Nix the pdfs it ruins the whole thing but don't have them as gifs. How long is it going to take you to type them into a page with the same layout as the rest of the site? It would look so much more professional.

Now the layout. I like the clean look but something's not right. The menu looks like an afterthought. Not a cohesive part of the page. I would

Move the logo so the left hand edge lines up with the left hand edge of the photo beneath.

Then I'd stick the menu top right in the gap so the right hand edge lines up with the right hand edge of the stuff below.

Then I'd centre the whole thing.

i would match the background of the logo with the background of the menu - the yellow stands out like a, er a sore thumb (i guess they can be yellow?!)

oh and i think the brown from the 'o' in the logo would well as a header colour (or slightly darker) so the site colours reflect the colours of the bar

I had a nice clean and simple text menu (with mouseover) but someone wanted buttons.:)

That has possibilities...

I guess I'll be doing some adjustment and checking with the owners.:)

I appreciate all the feedback. :) It's good to know where to turn.

So would I but I was going to let him sort the layout before I suggested it.

Reel 'em in slowly. :)

:)

Can you justify the text so that it forms a block. Left justified it looks a bit ragged down the right hand side.

I'm not sure about the header colours. Think I may prefer the greens. With brown it looks like a coffee shop.

Nah, 'cause I know I don't have to take any of the feedback if'n I don't agree with it.

Now getting the owners to agree/disagree/understand is a completely different thing, as you well know...:)

I'm not sure about the vertical menu up top, wouldn't horizontal look better?

Well I'm a little late (distracted by a 3hr Skype conversation with Golfer! :)), and my brain's now turned to mush, but when I first looked at it I thought 'arghhhh! Beige!'. I think someone suggested it looked like a coffee shop, and that was my first thought. Coffee shop bland. I just feel it needs a little extra 'something' to lift the colour slightly.

I'm not sure why (told you the old brain had turned to mush), but the menu seems somehow just sort of stuck there and doesn't seem to tie in with the rest of the page. It's like it's just sort of stuck there on the edge of the page. Also you have a different font on the menu, which could do with tying in with the rest of the site.

It's nice and clean, but veiwing in FF at 1024 x 768 (at full screen :)) it looks a little sparse.

Womble dearest, time for beddy byes. We've moved on a bit from there, now we're on the horizontal menu versus menu stuck at the top.

Either go to sleep or try and keep up dear. :)

Actually an oval one would look better. How are your oval menu skills?

OR.... or... or.... gets all excited as radical idea pops up.

No menu as such but a column of basic clipart symbols, right justified, sat on top of one another to make the menu. Hover brings up a tooltip saying what it is.

Ummmm, hang on let me grab some shots to show you what I mean.

OK, can't find any decent clip art and it's late. I can look tomorrow but I'm sure you know what I mean.

The clipart needs to be the stylised line drawing type, of say a knife and fork, a bottle, a menu or book and so on. Make them all the same colour and then sit them in a short column over to the right instead of the menu.

Found one example

Hi Mike

Everyone shoot me... !

I think a little light piano music would go nice in the background! Maybe even a little fade-in/fade-out sound track of conversational voices creating that 'convivial atmospheric touch!')

Okay... I'm ducking!

Other observations...

I wonder if some of the photos need lightening slightly?

I think the NavBar text is too small & the oval graphics too large.

Don't mind the beige theme personally - just needs some fine adjustments/blending of colours as others have suggested.

Text needs spacing out away from the photos, plus Navbar positioning/scaling needs sorting as you know.

Good graphic at the top. Overall the site has a 'smooth' and relaxing look:)

I agree with RickP. It's very "Frank Sinatra sang 'ere" and I like it. There are some very valid comments above but I would be careful about over-working the site too much: it may start to look a bit err... contrived.

Huh! You're getting at me aren't you Spitfire.:)

I do think though that the "Ole Blue Eyes" theme is something that could be run with. Infact... yeh, why not make it more like "Rick's". The theme might require the restaurant owners to make some extra adjustments to their place but I am a firm believer in the principle that the website comes first and then the client should make necessary changes to goods and services to fit with the site:)
