install DNS on Windows XP pro? - 10/4/2005 19:06:13
Hey everyone I have a website up and running on Windows XP Pro and currently I just had to type in my IP address to access the site but the time has come to buy a domain name so I did that and I thought I could route that to my IP but I guess I need a DNS, I found guides to installing it onto 2003 server edition OS but I cant find where it installs on XP Pro?

Any help is greatly appreciated and If there is a way around this let me know, I want to host the site all by my self with no DNS services from someone else

Thanks again
bobby

In XP pro you'll be working with IIS... see if this helps:

That link is for 2000 server, It says go to add remove programs, then windows components, then click details under networking to install DNS but its not there to install, A few others programs are but not DNS

Any ideas?

Sorry Spooky, been there 3 times before I came here, Thats how I got ISS set up!
Anyways he or she only talks about setting up DNS thru a free company that offers free DNS service, I want to DNS the website myself, I can find many tutorials on 2003 server for installing DNS but windows xp pro I cant find anything on!
Thank You for your time

Can you explain what you really want to do?

Do you *really* want to run a DNS? If so, why? They are not necessary in 99.9% of situations. If so, can you explain your network situation some more? What are you using for a gateway / router, what and how many services you want to make available, etc. I run DNS services at our office but not because I want a web presence but because we have both internal and external services, intra- and extra- nets, etc. and hence require DNS to make everything happen.

If you want to be able to use a name like www.mydomain.com instead of IP addresses, you don't need to run DNS services to do it. I do exactly that from my home network. I have my own domain name going to all of my own services running on my home server with no DNS necessary.

The reason you can't find solutions out there is because there really aren't any. I don't know of any situations that you'd need to run DNS in a single machine environment. But if you state your case, we probably come up with a fix.

sorry for the link...

this may be just what you're looking for:

http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/fr_index.html?/main/sbs-directupdate.html

keep in mind that Comcast tends to frown on this kind of thing. I don't recall if it's in the subscriber agreement or not, but I've heard of guys loosing their connection (and not getting it back) for trying to host their own sites.

If you have a static IP address, that's no problem. Have your domain name registrar set up forwarding to that IP.

If you do *not* have a static IP address, setting up a DNS server will *only* work for folks on your private network and not for standard internet users. (Well actually you could but you'd have to change your DNS entry everytime you reboot and it will have lots of downtime)

I use a product called dns2go at:

http://www.dns2go.com/

There are other similar products out there that may be better but I've been using this for quite a while and it works great for me. So why change? It allows me to use my domain name on a dynamic IP network (broadband cable).

Setting up DNS services AFAIK will not help you any in your situation unless you just want to serve LAN users. Then you don't even need it then really.

That explain it any better?

So if I get dns2go Itll worK? I do not have static IP nor will comcast give me one and my domainname registar "register.com"
Only gives me the option to type in a dns so I guess I have to have one to use the domain I bought from them right?

I'm not sure how it works with registrar.com. I use godaddy and I set my domain nameservers for that domain name to the server IP's provided to me by dns2go.

My understanding is that the client (upon system boot) goes to the dns2go servers and says "Hey, I'm IP xx.xx.xx.xx today. OK?" and then anyone that tries to go to your domain gets DNS calls routed tot he dns2go nameservers.

That make sense?

So what you need is a domain name with nameservers pointing to dns2go nameservers (see image) and a dns2go client configured on your host.

Again, my combo is godaddy and dns2go so I'm not positive it works the same with others.
