Windows 98SE - 10/5/2005 16:43:14
Hello. I am still running Windows 98 on my computer. I can't afford a new computer and the components inside do not support Windows XP. I was wanting to buy an external hard drive to back up my current hard drive (which is a whopping 9 GB!). However...all of the external hard drives I was looking at needed to have at a minimum Windows 98SE installed. I have looked all over the Microsoft website and cannot find a download at all. I need to upgrade my 98 to 98SE. Does anyone know where I can find it at? Thanks.

I can appreciate money being tight - however, what will an external hd cost? you can get a minimal pc from dell or gateway for $450 that will be light years ahead of ur... and a comparatively huge hd http://www.gateway.com/products/GConfig/proddetails.asp?system_id=dx100s&seg=hm <edit> in answer to your ?, I think MS stopped supporting win 98 awhile ago

Thanks for your reply. Regarding a budget PC...When I do get a new PC, I want to have all the current bells and whistles because I just can't afford to buy a new computer every few years. Some of the software I want requires certain minimums. I'll be able to buy a new computer in about a year. If I buy a budget PC, it will take me longer to buy what I'll really need. Any legitimate sites that offer the 98SE download?

As far as I know, Win98SE was only sold as an upgrade to Win98 by MS, it was never available as a free download. You might be able to pick up a second hand copy on e-bay or at a software recycling store very cheaply. You may even have a friend who has an old copy lying around unused.

Hi Dan, quote:
no actually, it was late edition 98 I'm not sure what you are saying. Around the time that Win98SE was released, we had to buy either an Upgrade disk (which would only work if Win was already installed), or the full Win98SE disk which could be installed from scratch. I don't think I have heard of a "late edition". Was it available as free download, and did it upgrade Win98 to Win98SE? I was under the impression that Win98SE is almost as different to Win98 as Win98SE is to WinMe. And that M$ never gave any of them away as free downloads. Am I wrong?

98SE was available as a full version OS, and as an upgrade. And is no longer distributed by ANYONE. The option of OSs from MS at the mo are WinXp Pro, Home, Server, Media Center. they dont even support Win2k anymore. Where's linux when ya need it :o)
