Ive swapped my old router for a Linksys wrt54 WirelessG broadband router (4 ports). 2 pc's are using the ports, but I want to get the laptop working wireless. Its got a wireless g card in it, but Ive no idea how to get it to see the router. I 'believe' the wireless is running on the laptop, its on in the bios, Ive got an icon in the taskbar (with a red x) , Im running it on channel 6 (the same as the router) and using the same SSID. The laptop just doesnt detect any running wireless networks - much less access it! The router wlan led is lit up, but doesnt show any activity. Ive read the readme, tried different configurations (security off, mac address only etc) Has any one got some tips that could lead to a eureka moment? [sm=unsure.gif]

fist make sure you have the router configured for wifi (you may have to turn it on) Also, if you're using WEP or WAP you'll need to load up the key to the laptop so it can gain access... and make sure DHCP is turned on (unless you've already set an IP for the MAC address on your laptop) Then you should just need to open a browser and type in the IP address for the router (through the laptop) As long as your wifi card is working on the laptop it should work. If it's not you will probably need to double check the drivers for it, and make sure it activates automatically (IOW you don't need to "turn it on") Some laptops keep wifi off until you use it (for power consumption and security, etc) [8\|]

Thats the odd part - it refers to wifi and bluetooth as the same thing. FN + F2 turns bluetooth / wifi on/off at the same time. So if thats the case, its on The router appears to be on as the wlan led is on. Im pretty sure its at the notebook end. When you detect local networks, should they show even if you arent allowed to access them?

what software is the wifi card running? Windows should be able to sniff a wifi signal automatically...

is this a built in wifi or an add-on card? I'm assuming built in... laptop brand, model?

Its on my Dell, mini pci wireless card. Built in when I got it, so I guess its windows software? Heres a screen shot if that helps?

I don't have Linksys routers but I do have wireless access points from Linksys. I've had to turn off the "Use Windows to configure.." many times in the past. Have you tried that? Going into the Advanced tab and putting the network in maually? Once it is in there, move it to the top of the list and see if that's any better.

I agree with Roger - I've had to turn off the "use windows to configure" too. I had a couple of problems setting my wireless network up too. In the end I removed the lot and started again with the firewall switched off, the SSID switched off - just let it broadcast to the world and hopefully the laptop will "see" it. Once you've got that link set up you can slowly re-introduce the various security measures. I can't tell you how many times I've had to unplug the router and wait 20 seconds etc...

It sounds to me like the laptop wifi isn't working... Do you have access to anothe wifi laptop or desktop that you could use to test it out?

You did say in the first post that it had a "red X though it right"? Is this red X though the "Speed bars"? If it is, right click on them, then select "Enable radio"
