ASP Support - 10/10/2005 9:49:45
Hey,

I seem to have a slight problem publishing my website. I used the DRW to create it, the problem is when I go to publish it, it says that "The following pages in your web are Active Server Pages (ASP). They will not work because the server you are publishing to does not support ASP."

I am using FP 2002 and I'm publishing the web on one of my companies intranet servers which has FP 2000 server extensions installed. Could the problem be because I'm using FP 2000 server extensions with FP 2002? Or what else could be causing the problem and how can i fix it.

Thanks,
Pat

Hello Pat,
I am only new at this stuff too but I do believe that if you are going to run ASP pages that the actual server needs to be ASP capable not only that if it is ASP.net then the server needs to be .net capable.

To find out what your server can handle you will probably need to talk to the IT dudes.

Even though the server extensions are there it still needs to be ASP capable.

Hope this helps a bit.

Bob

Its a Windows 2000 server, is there anyway I can check to see if its ASP or ASP.net capable. I have admin rights to the server so its that a problem for me to get into it and check.

Pat,
That is a bit techie for me even if I am on the right path for you.

Let me do a bit of quick checking and I will get back to you.

Someone else may actually answer because I am sure people here know exactly what to do.

Bob

Pat,
From what I have found out the server will need to be running some version of Internet Information Services (IIS), the latest version I believe is IIS V6.

Do you know if the server is running IIS.

You will have to get into the admin tools/manager on the server probably to see what is actually on the server and what is running.

You may even see IIS link that will take you to the IIS admin area.

If you can't find IIS anywhere then that may be the issue as I said this is a bit techie for a Telecoms Engineer like me.

Bob

Yeah it has IIS on it but not sure which version it is. And I can get to the IIS manager and I see a folder with my website's files in it.

Pat,
About the only suggestion that I have left for you then is to stop and start the server and also do the same for the server extensions.
Then try to publish again to see how it goes.

After that then I am afraid that we need a person with a bit more of an IT bent.

I don't know what version of server extensions work with what other bits and pieces but some bits will be backwards compatible, you may just need the right combination.
The main issue that may be here is that the version of ISS you are running is not compatible with the ASP version that is being produced by 2002 DRW. But as I said I am groping in the dark a bit.

Sorry that I have not been able to help you more.

But try the restarts you never know your luck in big city.

I just looked at your original post again and to me there are some key words there in the error message "the server you are publishing to does not support ASP".
So maybe the IIS is not running or it needs further configuration to enable ASP or in fact the versions are causing the problem.

Don't give up someone will come along sooner or later and save you and they are normally pretty good on this forum.

Regards,
Bob

No problem, thanks for all the help.

It seems that the IIS version is 5.0, I believe.

And the thing about, "the server you are publishing to does not support ASP", is that I thought having the the server extensions installed allowes you to run ASP pages But I'm prolly wrong.

Also, I not able to restart the server being that its the company's server and runs several other things that my co-workers would not a appreciate losing during the work day hehe.

And thanks again I'm in no hurry so I can wait for more replies.

Pat,
I did see a couple of things that suggested that ASP may need to be configured for the particular domain so maybe some minor reconfiguration of the IIS is all that is needed.
Please let us know how you go.

Also do a Google on "the server you are publishing to does not support ASP" you should get plenty of hits to read through and you may just crack it.

Pat,
One thing I just saw said that after the error message you get the option to Cancel or Continue.

Do you get that option?

Bob

Yeah I got that option, I clicked continue and it proceeds to publish my website but the asp page doesn't work correctly I get a yellow box saying :

"The Database Results component on this page is unable to display database content. The page must have a filename ending in '.asp', and the web must be hosted on a server that supports Active Server Pages."

So the pages that have the DRW bits on them have an extension of .asp?

OK,
Now when you browse to the pages you say that you are seeing the yellow box error.
I must admit that I have not seen the yellow box error when I actually browse the page but I have seen an error message on the page like "[this ain't working]"

My next step would be to stop and start the server extensions and then re-publish.

If that fails then it may be a configuration issues with IIS.

Are you sure it's not 6.0? Looking thru this thread it looks just like an IIS 6 installation that hasn't turned on ASP support yet. (IIS 6 has it *off* by default.)

A quick test:

Put *just* this code on an ASP page in HTML view:

<%Response.write("Hello World.")%>

and save it as an asp page like 1.asp or something.

Browse to it. All you should see is "Hello World." If you see anything else, could you post it?

By doing this, you take all FrontPage extensions and any other 'stuff' out of the equation and check solely for ASP support.

Yeah I may be wrong on the version of the IIS and I'll try that test page out.

I get a blank page :(

so prolly asp support isn't turned on. How would I go about turning it on? I've looked this up but I forget how. I'll look again but if you happen to know post it plz:)

I found this site that shows how to enable http://www.visualwin.com/ASP/ and I can get into IIS but I don't see the web service extensions folder in my IIS. Maybe thats prolly win xp that they are showing, i dunno.
