index.htm renaming to index.html - 10/11/2005 14:48:28
I am swapping hosting companies, my old sites were built with index.htm (in FP2002 & FP2003) as the home page and the new server which runs off a CPanel defaults to index.html.

The change is only important for older site where search engines and to a lesser degree people have bookmarked index.htm. I know I can do a re-direct.

As I publish FP literally renames index.htm to index.html.

I have tried editing the htaccess file and also the templates INF file by adding NoIndexRanaming=1 which in theory would stop this happening but no luck so far.

Anyone come across this one and resolved it?

Thanks.

Have you asked the hosting company to change it? Most will do it for you at no charge

Hi Corey,

They have been supporting all the way through but I didn't ask them that direct question - but now I will thanks for the idea.

Anytime - and just to give you an idea, usually the default home pages are something like index.htm, index.html, index.asp, default.htm, default.html, default.asp, etc. Some hosting companies set a specific home page for whatever reason but it can easily be changed by them.

I hate using htaccess with Frontpage because of the conflicts from time to time.

Yes, I agree. I now sent off a note to hosing support to ask them if they can indeed make it happen. We will see....

Thanks again.

It would appear from this and other cpanle threads I have read that there is no one big fix. FP and Microsoft are buggy enough that it could be only certain releases that are effected by this issue.

For the my first site that I have moved across, I used the cpanel permanent re-direct from index.htm to index.html and it seems to do the trick.

Regards,
David
