Tap F8 as your booting up to get to the boot menu choices. Choose "boot up to last known good configuration." If it can boot into there and runs okay, do the usual spyware removal, virus scan, etc. Mike

Hmmmn, tried safe mode but not last good config. Trouble is the machine locks up trying to boot safe. We'll give last good a shot. The only thing I can find at M$ is something to do with an improper shut down during a restore orking things up with a possible fix of undoing the previous restore. Somehow it doesn't seem promising.

This one is on MS knowledge base somewhere - but have forgotten precise details - sorry! Basically, 'Restore' is almost certainly corrupted & needs resetting. When I had same problem a while ago only solution was to disable & then re-enable 'Restore'.
