XP can't restore to the requested point... - 10/11/2005 16:55:58
I have a friend who is experiencing occasional blue screens (physical memory dump) and I figured if we did a restore it might resolve the problem. The problem now is that I can't get the system to restore.:) All addware/spyware/av stuff has been either removed or disabled but the system still won't restore. Everything seems to run OK until the reboot is over and restore comes back and says it can't complete the restore and no changes have been made.:)

Any ideas?

TIA

Tap F8 as your booting up to get to the boot menu choices. Choose "boot up to last known good configuration." If it can boot into there and runs okay, do the usual spyware removal, virus scan, etc.

Hmmmn, tried safe mode but not last good config. Trouble is the machine locks up trying to boot safe. We'll give last good a shot.

The only thing I can find at M$ is something to do with an improper shut down during a restore orking things up with a possible fix of undoing the previous restore. Somehow it doesn't seem promising.

Have you tested the RAM?

I had a bad stick in my old machine and it gave me a lot of trouble. M$ makes a cool (and free) tool to check memory:

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/mtinst.exe

yes, that M$

:)

locking up during safe boot, it sounds viral to me but might as well rule out hardware...

How long ago was a restore point set?

Is the machine running SP2?

What kind of collateral damage are we talking about to reinstall Windows... format the drive and start fresh kind of reinstall?

Haven't checked the RAM but will do...

The last restore point was approx. 3 months ago (that was to rid him of some other strange behavior):).

Yes to SP 2...

He's an older gentleman and will be returning to Florida with his wife for the winter season. He's going to leave the machine with me to "play with" so it'll probably end up good as new by the time he gets back.:):):):):)

This one is on MS knowledge base somewhere - but have forgotten precise details - sorry!
Basically, 'Restore' is almost certainly corrupted & needs resetting.
When I had same problem a while ago only solution was to disable & then re-enable 'Restore'.

Which version of Linux are you gonna "fix" it with?

:):):)
