login popup window - 10/13/2005 22:14:47
I use FrontPage 2003 and I am on a Linux server. I created a test page with a link to a file. When the link is clicked the file opens. After closing the file a small login window pops up with the login for the website. I can close it and all is fine.

The problem is that it is a bother to someone looking at it and it may be confusing because there is no reason for it to pop up. It seems not to happen on a machine without FrontPage installed. Here is the site: Popup Test

This does not happen on another site of mine that is hosted on a Windows server.

I also have a client who uses another host and she is experiencing the same thing.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this and knows a fix.

Problem solved. It seems as if a user has Office 2000 installed on a computer without the latest updates this will happen. Of course this doesn't help me as those without the updates are going to get that popup.

At least I can offer an explanation to a client

It sounds like a permissions or possibly updates. You are linking to a DOC file. So if the Word permissions are not set up properly they might get that error message. And if I remember correctly, the MIME type needs to be set up properly on the server. Usually for something like this, I would recommend converting that to a PDF. A DOC is just not all that great for the internet

Glad you part of it fixed - I guess I was typing and trying to find something on another forum that I answered like this the other day, I just could not remember what forum

Thanks Corey. Great idea to use the pdf. That's what I will do. That will make things a whole bunch easier.
