Web Based E-mail Question - 10/18/2005 8:00:25
Not sure where else ot put this... but here at work we also have Exchange 2003 server running Outlook Web Access. We have a big problem with SPAM.

Now in my office I use Microsoft Outlook and use the Junk E-mail filter built in. This works PERFECT. I barely get any spam come to my inbox.

But other users who have to use the Web Access get otns and tons of spam going to their inbox! Why cant this option be in the Web Access version as well, so they dont get spam... or is it their and I am missing it? The options in Outlook Web Access suck...

Anyone have any comments on this?

Yes they do. :)

The issue here is that OWA is *not* Outlook but rather Internet Explorer and Exchange. The SPAM tools in Outlook are in Outlook and not Exchange or IE so they aren't available to OWA.

We run a SPAM service to front-end our Exchange servers. I used to run our own separate gateway / virus / SPAM filter to front-end the mail but it seems cheaper in the long run to use a service.

There are products out there that you can run for less money (or even free) on the same box as Exchange but I do *not* recommend that at all. IMO you should filter all your communication data before it even reaches your mail server.

I use a product called AppRiver at:

http://www.appriver.com/

and I'm very pleased with the results. Almost zero administration and it just works. I wish all products did that.:)

Well we have tried this before. The problem we had when we filtered the e-mail before it got to the individual users was that there were complaints about missing mail... ie, legit e-mails going to the main junk folder,. but not reaching the individual users... The thing I like about the Outlook junk mail filter, is that all the mail still reaches the individual users... but the junk mail goes to their junk e-mail folder, so they can take a quick look through the folder and see if any legit e-mails have gotten through...

Yes, false positives are always an issue with any kind of mail filter. I have only had 1 false positive with this AppRiver product for the last 9 months we've been using it.

We average around 150K messages a week for 70 users going thru the filter with about 5,000 being legitimate ones and passed thru. 1 false positive in 9 months is something we can live with.

Now if 1 false positive will cost a company a $1,000,000 sale or something like that then it's probably not something you can live with, but for the other 99.9% it should be an acceptable level.

Again, I used to run and manage a SPAM/virus filter locally that was as good but the administrative overhead was beginning to become an issue. Now I rarely ever have to even think about the SPAM filter.
