How can I create an automated system that will create the username / password on a form and send it to the .htpasswd file so that the viewers registration is automatic?

Without knowing any more than what you've said here, my first suggestion would be to scamper back to the top of this page, left hand side, click on templates & tools, and investigate the Spooky Login.

That looks like it may work. Now, I have to ask, are there any free scripts that will do what I am looking for?

I don't know 'bout good free scripts, but I'm very pleased with the Spooky Login myself.

I did check this out:

http://www.scriptmate.com/products/smsecure/

but it was much more limited than Spooky's and just didn't seem to 'fit the bill'. Spooky's is much more customizeable and the support has been top-notch....

Just remember it doesnt work on Unix!

You can try ScriptMate Secure, it is free and well worth a look. If you are willing to pay then you should probably check Scriptmate User Manager at http://www.scriptmate.com/products/smumv1/ it is one of the best products in the market today and the support is amazing. I have been using it for 2 months now and it is cool.
