More than one domain on one IP-Address - 10/21/2005 12:32:23
Hello,

I would like to set more than one domain to one IP-Address (Windows 2000 server + IIS):

schluesseldienst muenchen
schluesseldienst berlin
schluesseldienst hamburg

...etc...

Since we have more than one website, but all of them have the same content (only the city changes) I would like to set them all to one IP-Address.

Can somebody help :o)?

Hi and Welcome to OutFront

There are a few ways of doing it.

1. If the web content is the same, you may be able to just do a DNS forward and set a cookie or session to determine the city.

2. You could build separate web sites and set up each on their own port. Most DNS services support that but some don't.

Can you explain a little more about "all of them have the same content (only the city changes)"?

Providing that each site is a different domain, you can set each one up independantly in IIS and be sure to put in the Host Header in each site.

This is how most web hosts host dozens and some times hundreds of sites on a handfuul of IP Addresses.

This must be a DNS issue, web host servers have a lot of sites on the same ip and the DNS server will handle wich site to access.... depending on address written in the browser (in the windows world, the world outside I don't know) however, the domain must be registered or why not use subs with city name?
