Hi all!

I'll be glad if you guy could give my site http://www.iproed.com/~z702/ain some comments.

Negative comments would be much appreciated because these are the areas where i can improve myself on webdesigning.
This site is an volunteering organisation website called AIN Society, Singapore.
I hope you guys can help and may god bless you.

Thank you in advance.

A great looking site, but I did find a couple of problems. I found the changing images on the top banner very distracting every time I moved the mouse over a different link, and as you've used images entirely on the home page, none of the text resizes at all, and you also have a potential problem if the images don't load for whatever reason - a blank page, and as you have no/empty alt attributes, the site's inaccessible to anyone using for example screen readers.
I also found the text - white on coloured background - particularly the white on yellow and on green - at the bottom of the page very difficult to make out as there's not an awful lot of contrast between the colours.

The text on the other pages does resize nicely (though I'm not a huge fan of frames), though it messes up the drop-down menu for 'contact us' if you resize the text.

Having said all that though, I really like the look and feel of the site and it really brightens up a dull day! [:)]

Welcome to OF btw! [:)]

I agree with the above plus it took a while to download. anyone on dial-up will have a problem with it.

Thanks fer the comment! I'll look onto that.

loads slowly

RickP -> RE: My 2nd Site needs feedback. (10/27/2005 15:46:59)

Hi Khai

I can confirm that the site is very slow loading - and I am on broadband. Maybe a part of that problem is the vast amount of javascript at the start of the page and another part is with it being combined with a 35kb banner graphic plus all the other graphics that 'swap' with that one - it will add up to a lot!

Also, regarding the banner... it nearly looks really impressive but the image on the right (of the man) doesn't look so good and that lets it down.

I like the way that the banner changes when one mouses over the navigation bar. Unfortunately though this feature is the cause of some problems for you!

I'll leave it at that for now but I do think you're potentially on your way to a nice looking site in many ways.

Hope the comments help [;)]

the js wont slow it down - its just text and not all that much - its the images...one on left is over 100KB. in fact, the whole page including borders and text are images.

Crikey, you're right, there's absolutely no text on there at all.

Khai, 2 problems with that. First, images take much longer to download than text. Get rid of the text images and put real text in the table cells then colour the background.

Second, the search engines and some browsers will just see a picture, no content so your site won't be popular with them.

walrus -> RE: My 2nd Site needs feedback. (10/28/2005 13:59:34)

The yellow text block in the middle is actually quite hard to read. This presents two offerings of advice
1. Accessibility
The benefit of text within a page is that a viewer can adjust their browser setting to make text bigger if they have visual impairment. This can completely throw off the design/layout of the page but at least everyone can see what you are trying to say.
2. Image types.
Images with only two colours can be 'gifs' which are not bad on size. Advantages of 'gifs' are transparency if required but are limited to 256 colours. This makes gradients very limited. 'jpegs' allow a wider range of colours but the compression can cause disruption to the image. If using 'jpegs' try to make sure the compression is not too much. Say 70% instead of 40%, otherwise you get a ghosting effect which is a problem when trying to read white text on a yellow background.

Thanks walrus. I really appreciate it. I understand the accessibility problem.
However, i kind of unsure of the jpegs compressions, it it a compression when i export the images or the compression of the individual images?

thank you in advance!

d a v e -> RE: My 2nd Site needs feedback. (10/29/2005 3:07:24)

they would all be better as real text, but... the bottom 3 text blocks should be saved as gifs anyway as they are just text on a single colour. the images with gradients  nees to be a higher quality or the text will suffer - don't compress it too much! in fireworks use the 'better/higher' quality preset (the one with sharpen image edges turned on) and a quality of around 70-80% - you can see in the preview when it starts to get bad :)

incidentally if i browse with images turned off i see nothing!!! (some users on modems do browse without images, and those using screen readers  'see' only real text (or what's in the alt attribute)

if you are going to use images for text (not a good idea for a whole site) then use the alt attribute in each image
<img name="index_r11_c23" src="images/index_r11_c23.jpg" width="254" height="134" border="0" alt="insert the text in the image here">

walrus -> RE: My 2nd Site needs feedback. (10/29/2005 4:06:10)

there are some instances where you may see images used as text on other websites

maybe a heading or special banner when the designer wants to use a really unusual font or where they want to have an effect applied to the text. this might be when there is a texture applied within the text like a metallic effect or for 3d image text
unless done well though, they can look a bit naff.

Hi all!

I've made ammendments to this site, considering those factors some of you all gave me. I really appreciate it!

God bless.

Ummmm are you sure you're supposed to have this in the middle? [:D]

Yes Jaybee, because i did not make the images compatible with autostretching.
Erm... is there a problem in the iFrame?
