Hello, All.

I've been a lurker here for a long time, and I read Tom's newsletters every week. So this is first a hello to all.

I need some advice. I'm setting up a new website for my small business, and being a non-techie, I've found a young man who works in my field to help. He is suggesting a dynamic versus static web site, because he says it's a lot easier to make changes right online.

I've read, however, that some search engines won't list dynamic sites. My web person also told me that the long and odd-looking URLs that you get with a dynamic site can be masked (my term), so they're shorter and easier to remember. However, somewhere I thought I'd read that search engines may reject those masked links.

I'm using security software to protect several levels of folders.

Dynamic sounds more "sexy," but static sounds possibly safer for better search engine listings?

Any help is appreciated. Pardon the ramble.

Judy,

A site being dynamic vs static has nothing to do with the name of the pages at all, only the coding behind the page. It seems like you are assuming a dynamic site will have odd URLs, which isn't always the case.

What dynamic site software were you looking at?

Thank you very much for responding!

I don't know what software is being used, as someone who does web pages is helping me. He actually told me that the URLs would look a bit strange.

I have read some articles which suggest that dynamic sites are at a disadvantage in getting in the search engines. Maybe I've misunderstood. I hope so because it sounds good to be able to just go online and make changes to a site.

For what it's worth I suggest you get a second or third opinion. It sounds like you're already having doubts about the plan your friend is proposing I would listen to those nagging feelings.

I recently started SEO work for a client, but had to switch gears to developer because the web site was so poorly written that I couldn't begin to promote the site without rebuilding everything from the ground up.

Instead of a dynamic site you may end up with dynamic shite.

Thank you *very* much for this response. It backs up the decision I just made about five minutes ago to trust my gut. Instead of spending $500 for someone to make a web page for me, I'm going to download a template I found through this site, and do the thing in Notepad.

I set up an online blog at blogspot.com, and even pasted in a sound clip, and I think if I can do that I can set up a basic web page.

And I've been uploading PP/Flash files I've created with Articulate Presenter ("Flash for Dummies," I call it) to my current site, so I think I can muddle through.

I'm at www.scopingcareers.com right now, and the site is embarrassing, so I'm going to create a new look.

I need to learn how to do this stuff for myself, as much as possible. I'm sticking with a static site.

There is truth in this statement and not. It has to do with session IDs. If a URL has a session ID then it most likely will have issues getting the page ranked. If not all is equal on dynamic VS. static.

If doing the site yourself invest in the time to learn, understand and implement the folowing as it will SAVE YOU SOOOO MUCH TIME DOWN THE ROAD...

1) Includes: You can use Frontpage includes or what is called server side includes or SSI.

2) External CSS. Use this for fonts sizes, font colors, hyperlinks mostly just basics.

Why you ask in your head?

Answers:

Ever have to change one menu link that appears on every page for your sites navigation? If not using include pages you would have to edit every page. If using includes you only have to edit once. Big time savings.

Same with CSS. Say you do not like the link color on your hyperlinks. If not using external CSS you would have to edit every page. With external CSS you just make one change and your done.

It all comes down to time management in my eyes. I am not lazy but hate doing busy work.

Thanks much for your in-depth response yesterday. In time, I want to learn to create my own web pages, but since I'm in a hurry right now to just get a basic site up, I'm going to use a template which, as far as I can tell, already incorporates a lot of the features you've mentioned.
