There are several ways to deal with such files, either get the sender to send emails to you in text-only format, or save the file to your hard drive and go to the following website and extract the content from these attachments by calling up the file in the box at the top and clicking "Send File" http://tud.at/php/tnef/ _____________________________

I don't think winmail.dat files are only sent if they're using MS Word as their editor. My daughter uses Outlook as her editor (not Word) and her messages to me always include a winmail.dat file. Most times I just delete them since everything is inside the body of her message, but occasionally she attaches a Word document for me to proof and the attachment itself ends up inside the winmail.dat file. And if I try to use Word to read that file, it ends up in gobbledygook! I dunno, maybe it's the way she's attaching it or due to some setting within Outlook. Nicole Posts: 2831 Joined: 9/15/2004 From: Nambucca / Kempsey, Australia Status: offline	RE: Winmail.dat - 10/25/2005 16:30:35 Months ago my ISP changed their security settings and subsequently I found that with one client in particular who was sending "upcoming events" in word format (directly from their poster) to me for inclusion on their site weren't getting through. That was when i was using Outlook. I've now changed to Thunderbird and at least these MS Word attachments were appearing as winmail.dat files which was more than before. With that website I'm now able to open these word documents without trying to get the client to alter their way of sending documents to me. Nobody likes having to change the way they do things, especially people who don't know much about computers/internet, so it's alleviated a problem without having to confuse my client. _____________________________ (in reply to rdouglass)

Yes, I do know about that option, but she has it unchecked. Her editing is done directly in Outlook.

Now that's something I will need to explore. I've always assumed (and you know what they say about the word "assume"!) that she's been sending the Word files as a simple attachment in Outlook, but maybe she's actually been sending them from within Word "for review" as you mentioned. Good point....
