Does anyone know how to unselect programs from loading in Win 2000?

When first starting Windows?

From Start > run > msconfig
You can modify how windows loads programs here (rather than modify the registry)

The other would be to modify the services loaded (but youd need to be aware of what services are required)
Start > run > services.msc

Another option, if you want a "one-time" thing and the programs are loading from your Startup folder, just hold down the left-shift key while Windows is booting up. That prevents all items in your Startup folder from loading. But I suspect you were looking for Spooky's solution.

When I try to run msconfig in Win 2000 I get a cannot find file error. I had tried msconfig prior to my first post because I ran it occasionally in Win 98. Any clue what might be happening?

Yep, you're right. Windows 2000 never came with a copy of msconfig.

You can however use the Windows XP version of msconfig on Windows 2000 if you have access to an XP machine. Just copy the XP msconfig.exe file from the c:\windows\system folder to the Windows 2000 c:\winnt\system32 folder, and run as normal.

There's also a few reputable sites on the 'net that offer the file as a free download. Use Google to search for them.

Another option (which I use) is to download "Startup Control Panel" by Mike Lin. It installs an applet in your Control Panel, which gives you full control of all programs that start from the registry, ini files, and your startup folder. You can also temporarily "delete" program entries from both locations without having to permanently delete them, so they're easy to restore. And that's very useful if you're troubleshooting.
