feeling daft - 10/26/2005 5:18:09
thanks for letting me join your forum.
I feel a bit daft because I returned to education as a mature student because my kids were all tech'd up and I didn't have a clue. A few years later I've learned a lot but there's so much more I need to learn.
I can only get on line when the kids are in bed usually but when I get the chance I'm scrolling through all your posts as they're so interesting.I'm taking on the job of designing a site for our charity and I'm just so glad I stumbled across you guys, because when I get going in the next couple of weeks, I know for a fact that I'll be scratching my head a lot.
We've got the web space sorted and the domain name, now it's just down to yours truly to get going..I've done a rough story board so if you don't mind when I get going I might have to lean on you quite a bit.
I've got loads of books from college etc..but I'm dyslexic so reading and following instructions is a tough one for me, I'd rather do it and then you tell me where I'm going wrong..or you talk me through it if I'm really finding it tough.
thanks again

Did we let you join our forum????? Who allowed that? Coooo, they're letting just anyone in these days!!!!:)

Welcome aboard and you're in good company. Yes there are some "children" on here but the rest of us are, errrr, vintage. Do not feel daft, we all start somewhere and believe me, your questions will teach somebody else who reads them so don't be shy.

We'll give you all the help we can but just remember when you post,

1. You've tried to do it yourself first. We'll spend gobs of time helping those who try but those who just expect to get it done for them will get short shrift and pointed to instructions.

2. Give us detail. What, how, using what, example. We're good but we're not clairvoyant.

3. Have fun. Sometimes it's difficult, sometimes really frustrating but when you see your work on the web it's worth it.

My only caution to you is the dyslexia thing. I used to teach students web development and those with dyslexia needed to be extra vigilant. Always run your page content through the spell checker. Nothing worse for visitors than spelling mistakes.

If you end up having to go into the code for some reason later down the line then make it clear to whoever is helping you that you are dyslexic so they can watch out for code problems. Code won't work if theres a letter in the wrong place.

Other than that, BIG WHOOPS to you for having the guts to take this on at your age!!! :) Just joking. There's plenty older than you on here. Welcome aboard.

Welcome to outfront Patch. I note from previous posts that some of our number have assumed from the words "mature student" that you are a one-foot-in-the-grave old fart like some of the rest of us. I assume from the fact you've got children at home that you are still relatively young. Either way you've come to the right place to learn; there are a lot of clever people on here that can help you with most things to do with building a website.

Some of us take these hurtful throwaway comments of Jaybee's personally you know.:)

Having taught mature students I am well aware that mature these days is anything from 25 upwards.

one-foot-in-the-grave old farts on the other hand are known as Manure Students. :)

If in the Hexam area he is considered quiet and shy, you can't begin to imagine what the rest of them must be like.:)

Just like me. Wonderful friendly people. It can get a bit noisy. I admit.

Well after the cr@p day I've had today that's really cheered me up! You really must stop misleading new members like that though Ian - they'll soon realise what your true title should have been...:)

Welcome btw, and ignore all of the above except Jaybee - they're all a couple of tags short of validity! :) :) (it's their great age that makes 'em crazy like that)

RE: feeling daft - 10/27/2005 5:27:52
aww thanks guys, I'm on a few forums for things ranging from charity/disability to the silly ones too (including the PetePrice forum) a local radio phone in host....which gets quite heated at times......
and I can honestly say, this is the best, friendly welcome I've ever had....

You were right the first time, I'd fit more in tho the "manure" tag..late Mum and all that, I thought the "patchouli" might have given that away also!..and going back to college as a "manure student" carrying all life's $... with me was a tough one I can tell you. I did some great courses and have loads of stuff under my belt now but the truth is I havn't been able to put any of it in to practise yet, as I couldn't afford my own PC at home until last year and through family bereavment and illness with my youngest child, I'm only just now getting the chance to get my act together.

Although I'm just about to start on our charity web site, I'm also doing a couple of other things too, and one of them is to design some simple games for children with learning difficulties, very visual and using some Makaton sign language....this is inspired by my youngest daughter who has Down Syndrome. I have four little characters of my own design who my daughter relates to and I thought that I could develop this and initially get it up on a site and then market the CD's...

My 12 yr. old bless her says it could be as big as the Teletubbies ( bless her) and then I thought...why not ? think big eh...

I tested the water on some of the disability forums and I got about 30 replies from families asking if they could buy the cd's now, so looks like it could work.

Well, when the kids are back at school, I'll make a start and let you know how I'm getting on, thanks again for the welcome,

Patch

there are quite a few that have drifted over to the dark side (depending upon your point of view) including myself.

Dreamweaver users are more than welcome!
