Front Page Form Issues - 10/26/2005 17:47:55
I've seen similar posts as to this one I'm submitting...my basic Front Page form just isn't working. My web host says the FP extensions have been turned on/reloaded. But perhaps the server still won't allow the form feature to work? (I saw someone comment on that in another thread.)

http://www.cardsforhope.com/orderform.html

So, would someone mind looking at this site to see if they can tell what the problem is?

I saw a suggestion to use http://www.response-o-matic.com/, so I may just do that. I don't mind the advertising, as long as it isn't too obnoxious.

Any other suggestions? I am only familiar with the WYSWIG programs (Photoshop and FrontPage) so any programming suggestions go right over my head!

Many, many thanks!!

RE: Front Page Form Issues - 10/26/2005 19:27:58
Me again. So I realized that the form information is being sent to the correct email address. But the user gets an error message instead of a list of their submitted data.

FrontPage Error.
User: please report details to this site's webmaster.

Webmaster: please see the server's system log for more details.

So at least I'm half way there. I'd really like some suggestions.

I tried the 3rd party way, but the advertising was way to shameless. It's not appropriate for my site: www.cardsforhope.com.

Hi Heidi,

Doin't see any huge problems with the form.

From looking at the HTMl, looks like the extensions are there in some form.

Your file results appear to be going to ../_private/form_results.csv

Get the red out , try recalculating hyperlinks and republishing.

Thanks, Micheal, I think I fixed it...I hope I didn't delete any necessary HTML.

If you get a chance to look at it, to be sure, this newbie would be so very grateful! I get scared touching the HTML.

I used the website that someone recommended to test if the FP extensions were working properly on the server. The website said "no." I suppose that could be the problem, which is out of my control, it seems.

The error message I'm getting now:

Cannot run the FrontPage Server Extensions on this page: "http://cardsforhope.com/orderform.html"

Makes me think it is a page issue, though. Is it trying to run the extensions, but can't because of my order form?

Thanks for your time. I know you all get a lot of the same question.

Hi Heidi,

Did you remive the file fluff ../ as I suggested?

If so, did FrontPage place it back in?

Also, did you try recalculating hyperlinks and resetting the extensions?

I have to confess...I'm not sure exactly what you mean. I thought you were just referring to the one link. Do the other links look off, too?

Do I do the "calculations" manually? Or will Front Page do that for me?

You are too kind to help me!!

Heidi,

I am not sure if FrontPage puts the extra fluff in or not.

To remove it, you would open form properties by right clicking inside the form surround (the dashed or dotted line surrounding your form fields).

From this menu, you select "Form Properties"

On the initial form property display, remove the following...
../

Click Options and make sure the file results destination has that removed as well.

Re: Recalculating Hyperlinks, this is found under Tools. I have heard mention this is sometimes easier with the site open live, but I think it is OK to do it on the local web and then publish.

If you have a site control panel, look for mention of FrontPage. This is where you would reset or reinstall the extensions.

I would attempt this and then republish the site. Make sure to go to File >> Publish Web >> and make sure the destination starts with http:// and not ftp://

Honestly if this doesn't work, check with your host to make sure the server is set for formmail with FrontPage. If that isn't the issue, get a new host.

RE: Front Page Form Issues - 10/31/2005 14:51:49
Thanks so much. I have done all that and republished. Big SIGH. I think it is a server issue. I went to a website recommended in another forum here that would "test" the extensions on the server. It said they were not working properly. So it could be that.

Finding a new webhost will be complicated, but I'll look into that.

I just looked at your website. Would you be able to recreate this form for me along with a confirmation page? (I can send the draft of that to you.) What is the cost? I was thinking of paying for someone do this part for me anyway, since it's my first attempt. I have a few changes to make first, though.

If I know the Front Page form is perfect, then I will feel more comfortable switching webhosts. (It is a friend hosting my site at a reasonable cost, so it's awkward to just switch.)

Please email me directly if you'd like: hreichert@cardsforhope.com

Many thanks,
Heidi

Hi Heidi,

This is a fairly simple form. I realise you are new to this, but I think we can walk you through it.

I suspected it might be the srever.

I am sure you will get a number of recommendations for hosting. I have been using Boundgrid for a while now. The extensions have been working well for me and you can host multiple domains and subdomains for the same $7.95/month.

If you decide to toss $$ at me for services provided at sometime in the future, contact me via my site regarding this.

Okay, thanks! My webhost is currently working on this. The form does now submit information correctly to my email address, but the confirmation page isn't showing up. Does that still sound like a server issue?

This is the error message:

FrontPage Error.

I do have a confirmation page set up. I followed the directions from this website:

http://www.mm.com/micronet/support/fpform.html

Is there another way? Or another step I should take??

Thanks!
Heidi

Are you using formmail to redirect the page?

Not sure...is that a Front Page feature? I'm just using the windows/features in the advanced form menu of Front Page. Is formmail something I should look into??

No, its not a frontpage feature but works very well with it!

I use formmail. All you have to do is put the formmail.pl script in the cgi bin of your ftp server and the form hits the script and emails you the results plus the client sees a thank you page

Heres how.

But if you are already getting the results, in advanced form properties just add a redirect option and point the value to your page eg:

Click in the form, click form properties. click advanced, in hidden fields make sure there is one that says redirect, if not create one by adding. Set the name to redirect and the value should be eg http://www.yoursite.com/thank_you.htm making sure you have uploaded a thank_you page?

Hi Heidi,

Once again, I don't thinks the server extensions aren't working properly. You confirmation URL is a working page and it should be forwarded there.

I think it's working!!!!!!!!!!

When I do the ftp to publish my page, it doesn't work. When I do the FrontPage publish option, it does work! And, somewhere I have the page link listed as "htm", but the page itself was "htm". Now that it is "htm", it works. I don't know why that happened, but I don't want to change it now.

www.cardsforhope.com/orderform.htm

I hope you don't have to hear from me again!! And I hope one day I can be as helpful to someone else as you have been to me!

Heidi
