storing bookmarks online - 10/27/2005 6:52:35
For a long time I used a free online service for storing my favorites online (very handy) but then for some reason it just wouldn't upload them anymore. Yesterday I tried uploading my favorites folder to a directory on my own website but for some reason this was real problematic and it only partially uploaded the shortcuts - any experience of this anyone? I'd like to either upload them to my own site or use another free service - but with the latter one is always wary and suspicious of such 'free' services - can anyone recommend a bona-fide service of this sort?

I normally back this up and also all my data once a week. I store all of this under c:\data so I always know if my hd crashed it would be installable (real word?) products only (I also ghost once a month for my complete backup).
I use my local server for this but I would suggest using a CDR for storage.
I do the same thing for all of my web sites log files for historical research if needed.

I want to store them online for use when away from my own PC rather than as BackUp - I have that sorted in various ways locally.
Not heard of the Google service for this before but I can't follow that link at present - it's doing weird things!
Any more offers?
What about my problem uploading them to my own web - why should that be - does anyone else store them online this way?

Low tech...
Open a pop based email account and email them to it. Then whenever you are you have them to import.

Yeh - that's one way - except...
I normally set my Outlook Express to delete everything off the server once I've downloaded my mail.
And... it's a bit slower to get at them when I need to from another PC.
But it's an option...

dont go to the email thru outlook - go direct to the url to sign in. and why would they be slower?

What I mean is, if I am at a PC elsewhere and I want to access my bookmarks I would first have to login to my email a/c and open the email that has them attached (assuming I am understanding this proposed method correctly). If I were to upload them to a directory on my web I would just go directly to them (albeit I would still password protect the directory) and they would be slightly quicker to access this way than logging into an webmail a/c and opening the email that contains them. I also have a problem accessing my webmail behind some firewalls (that I don't control).
It's all fine tuning but I like things to be as quick as possible. Carrying disks is not the answer for me - I go a lot of places most days that have PCs and I'm not always planning to use them but sometimes I may want to and then the online bookmarks really come in handy. The bookmark store service I used for a long time didn't appear to have any catches or nasties but these days I'm afraid we (I!) get suspicious of everything that's 'free'! Has anyone ever heard of a problem with such services as mybookmarks.com?

Yes, it has been floating around (the thought) for a few years. This is just one of Redmonds ideas.

Rick, it sounds as though you are using Internet Explorer as your primary browser. Have you considered switching to Firefox? It will import all your IE favorites via a wizard, plus it stores "bookmarks" (favorites) as a plain html page not shortcuts. This page could then be stored neatly anywhere online, plus accessed and read easily in any browser.
Additionally there are six pages of Extensions for Firefox Bookmarks, some of which relate to keeping them online and synchronisation.

& thanks Kitka for that most useful info - yet more reasons for me to spend some extra time looking at FX - I use it regularly for design checks but as yet haven't had time to explore it thoroughly - but I will!
