Hide Portion of Document From Search Engine - 10/28/2005 13:52:10
Is there a way to hide a portion of a page from being spidered? Let me explain. At the bottom of most documents on our intranet site appears the name, phone number and fax number of the document author. This is technically footer information only. The problem I am having is when a user does a search on say, "fax number", all the documents that have a fax number listed at the bottom of the page are returned. If I used say javascript to write the footer information, would that stop the search engine from including it in a search for "fax number"?

Not sure about this one but wanted to throw it out there.... What about an <iframe>? Then the source page for the iframe throw in a directory that is diss allowed via robots.txt? Not sure if that would work or not. Take care, Brian

Thanks Brian. I rewrote the footer info in javascript and now have to wait until our search engine recrawls the site this weekend. If javascript doesn't work, your idea will be my next one to try.

Using a straight image would be much simpler - you could make it a link to your contact page with the full info there to ensure that those hiding images or using text readers can get at the information fairly easily.

If the fax number appears once on a contact page then it might bring that up but it's better than it returning dozens of pages with the fax number at the bottom I guess.
