suzkaw -> easy meta question (3/15/2001 16:25:00)

I have a question. It might be relly stupid but here it is. What does this meta tag do and why are they some times different?

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">

Also are these tags necessary:
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">

<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0">

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">

This basically tells browser that the document is in English, telling it what character set to use.

This is the MS way of doing it, it could also be
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
which is more generic.

The other two are basically ads for FP but apparantly also feed information back to MS about what sites use FP. Not sure how they do this or where I read it, but that is the reason I always remove them.
